COVID-19: Practice Guidelines for Reopening Social Work Practices
During the COVID-19 public health emergency, the federal government, states, and localities issued emergency orders requiring the temporary closure of nonessential businesses, including clinical social work practices. As a result, many clinical social work private practices have been closed or have shifted to virtual, versus in-person, service provision. As governments begin to lift these orders and permit the reopening of nonessential businesses, NASW offers this guidance on resuming the provision of in-person services.
COVID-19 Legal Resources
The Families First Coronavirus Response Act requires that employers with fewer than 500 employees provide two weeks (10 workdays) of emergency paid sick leave. However, employers with fewer than 50 workers could be exempt. Learn about key federal workplace laws protecting social workers during the current pandemic related to unemployment insurance, worker's compensation, sick and family leave health insurance, and more.
All Workers, Including Social Workers, Deserve Protection from COVID-19
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has failed to issue an Emergency Temporary Standard (ETS) based on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidance to protect all workers from exposure to COVID-19 in the workplace. The COVID-19 Every Worker Protection Act (H.R. 6559) would require OSHA to immediately issue an ETS for COVID-19. Without this mandate, workplaces are not required to implement much-needed safety protections and protocols. This compromises the health and safety of essential workers, including social workers, who are on the frontlines in hospitals, nursing homes, and other high-risk settings providing much-needed services. Send your lawmakers a prewritten email telling them to require OSHA to mandate protections to reduce COVID-19 spread.

Social Worker COVID-19 Survey Results
Recently, NASW, the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB), and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) invited members to take the Social Worker COVID-19 Survey to provide feedback on how the pandemic was affecting them as social workers. One of the top challenges identified in the survey was how to effectively deploy technology to provide social work services and education.
Mural Includes Social Workers
Last week CBS This Morning aired a segment on Miami artist Claudia La Bianca, who is painting murals at South Florida hospitals that honor superheroes on the frontlines of the coronavirus pandemic. Her images include social workers.

Social workers also have been key to expanding access to mental health services. Thanks to advocacy efforts by NASW, its Virginia Chapter, and their allies, federal and state officials have loosened telehealth regulations to enable more people to receive mental health services from video-based, and as of May 1, audio-only devices such as smartphones and landlines.
