NASW strongly condemns the continued death of unarmed people who are African American at the hands of police. We renew our call for the nation to adopt policing reforms to address this crisis. There also must be a change in police culture. Police must root out those officers who continue to view Black lives as being less valuable than that of other Americans. NASW will continue to fight for that cultural change.

NASW is working with long-time partner Give an Hour (GAH) to recruit licensed clinical social workers for GAH's new Hospital Heroes Program to provide mental health support to essential hospital workers in New York City, and beyond. Many clinical social workers already have stepped up and volunteered, but the need is great. "Physicians, nurses, social workers, and hospital support staff are dealing with a public health crisis not seen since the 1918 flu pandemic yet are providing compassionate, top-notch care in extremely trying circumstances," said NASW CEO Angelo McClain, PhD, LICSW. "NASW is proud to partner with Give an Hour on a program that will give these heroes the emotional support they need to do their lifesaving work."
NASW played a lead role in conceiving and funding the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) consensus study report Integrating Social Care into the Delivery of Health Care: Moving Upstream to Improve the Nation's Health. This landmark report recognizes that social workers are specialists in identifying and addressing social needs, such as housing, economic security, and access to nutritious food and transportation. It includes numerous recommendations to ensure that the nation's health care systems address the many factors that contribute to health.
