This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising and the beginning of the public fight for LGBTQ rights and human rights. Now more than ever, it is important to stay current on issues, policies, movements, and ways to combat LGBTQ prejudice. NASW believes social workers are key allies in the necessary efforts to ensure wellness, safety, and equity for all LGBTQ persons. Social workers have a shared commitment to promoting laws, policies, and programming that affirm, support, and value LGBTQ individuals, families, and communities. Access NASW LGBTQ resources.
The NASW-Illinois chapter helped push for legislation that ensures older people who are LGBTQ or living with HIV are targeted in programs funded through the
Federal Older Americans Act. The bill passed the Illinois General Assembly and must now be approved by Gov. J.B. Pritzker.
NASW has supported the Geriatrics Workforce Improvement Act (S. 299), reintroduced by Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) and Senator Robert P. Casey, Jr. (D-PA). The bill improves health outcomes for older adults by establishing formal funding for two federal training programs: the Geriatric Academic Career Awards (GACA), a recently reestablished program for developing academic clinical educators specializing in aging, and the Geriatrics Workforce Enhancement Program (GWEP), which trains health care teams serving older adults. Clinical social workers are among the professionals eligible for GACA, and social workers are among the professionals eligible for interdisciplinary training through GWEP. Read NASW’s letter of support for S. 299 and urge your senators to support the bill.
The Older Americans Act (OAA) expires on September 30, 2019. OAA is the major federal discretionary funding source for home and community-based services for older adults. Congress is working on reauthorization. As a member of the Leadership Council of Aging Organizations (LCAO), NASW helped to develop a robust set of OAA reauthorization recommendations, which the coalition sent to Congress in late April. Read the LCAO Consensus Recommendations for the 2019 Older Americans Act Reauthorization and use them in your own advocacy.

The American Academy for Social Work and Social Welfare set out 12 grand challenges for social work and society in three broad categories: individual and family well-being, stronger social fabric, and just society. Social workers must strive toward social progress in these categories by relying on evidence-based methods. The compendium of articles presented in Grand Challenges for Society highlights scholarship that provides a research base to address health disparities, social isolation, and financial capability, among others. This book not only provides the most up-to-date research but also alerts the field to gaps in the literature that still need to be explored to achieve the aims of the Grand Challenges for Social Work.

Over the last 100+ years, social workers have been involved in some of the most important social advances in the U.S. and throughout the world. One of the best ways to become the type of social worker who can help change the world is to earn a degree in social work such as a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) or a Master of Social Work (MSW). Through a BSW or MSW program, you can gain the skills and knowledge you need to help improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and groups in under-served or at-risk populations.
