NASW-California News
Congratulations to NASW-California member Shirley Otis-Green, whose organization – Coalition for Compassionate Care of California (CCCC) – has received a Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) to recruit, train, and empower patient-ambassadors for palliative care. Clinical Director Otis-Green, MSW, ACSW, LCSW, OSW-C, along with Program Director Kristine Wallach, will lead this engagement project at CCCC.
When adopted at the state level, physician aid in dying (PAD) is a process that allows physicians to write a prescription for a terminally ill person to self-administer medication to end his or her life. It’s important for social workers to understand the PAD process and its legal, clinical, and ethical practice implications. Social workers who serve patients with terminal illness should be prepared to respond to inquiries about PAD and address them appropriately, regardless of personal opinion or preference.
Submit your nominations and applications for the 2018 Circle of Life Awards by August 13, 2018. Abstract
Much of the literature on aid-in-dying (AID) has drawn heavily on rights-based ethical and legal frameworks that emphasize patients’ rights of self-determination in end-of-life decision-making. Less attention has focused on how terminally ill people actually experience such putative rights once they are legally authorized. This analytic essay draws on findings from the Vermont Study on Aid-in-Dying, an ethnographic study of the implementation of AID in Vermont (2015–2017).

Social workers' therapeutic relationships with clients eventually come to an end. The way they end and how the social worker handles terminations can have ethical and legal implications. Prepare for termination from the beginning and talk about it early on so both parties can have several sessions to discuss ending therapy. This article addresses common issues that may arise during termination and ways to enhance client care while avoiding allegations of abandonment.
Legal Issue of the Month articles offer guidance in everyday social work practice. Articles address commonly asked questions as well as hot-button emerging issues. NASW members only.
