NASW members will receive their association news in a different package beginning in August, with the launch of a bimonthly print magazine, Social Work Advocates. The magazine will replace the NASW News, but much of the content now published in the News will make its way into the new publication in a different format. Members can expect coverage of NASW news and events, in-depth feature articles about social work trends and issues, and member highlights. New content that will be featured in the magazine includes a dedicated section for our chapters, guest editorials, and more news from the schools of social work. We will ask members to weigh in on various topics in each issue.
Judge Brett Kavanaugh's judicial record and past opinions demonstrate hostility toward women's reproductive rights, LGBT rights, and other issues. NASW is deeply disturbed Kavanaugh was against court rulings that supported the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act. Kavanaugh's appointment would create an imbalance of judicial philosophy at a time when the court seems to be reneging on protecting the rights of vulnerable and underrepresented Americans.
Episode 10: Immigration in Crisis
The Trump administration’s policy criminalizes those who are seeking asylum and need help. In this special Social Work Talks podcast episode, NASW experts weigh in on the immigration crisis in the United States. Find out how social workers can help detained families by knowing the facts and by serving as translators.
The mass criminal prosecution and incarceration of people entering the country without authorization along the Southwest border has been declared a success in deterring others from making the same journey. Analysis by the Vera Institute of Justice, one of the nation's leading think tanks on criminal justice policies, and Dr. Jonathan Kringen of the University of New Haven, however, shows that there is no evidence to support claims that a highly touted example of this tactic—Operation Streamline—deterred migration. Furthermore, according to the research, zero tolerance also comes at a high cost to immigrants, the court system, taxpayers, and due process.

Description
Depression constitutes a significant part of the global burden of diseases. General practice plays a central role in diagnosing and monitoring depression. A telemedicine solution comprising a web-based psychometric tool may reduce the number of visits to general practice and increase patient empowerment. However, the current use of telemedicine solutions in the field of general practice is limited. This study aims to explore barriers and facilitators to using a web-based version of the Major Depression Inventory (eMDI) for psychometric testing of potentially depressive patients in general practice.

| BEHAVIORAL HEALTH & THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM |
Consensus Workgroup Policy Recommendations to the 115th Congress & Trump Administration on Behavioral Health Issues in the Criminal Justice System
The Consensus Workgroup promotes collaboration on policy, research, and practice issues at the intersection of behavioral health and criminal justice. The Consensus Workgroup includes organizations representing individuals with behavioral health needs and their families, providers, correctional systems and administrators, criminal justice reformers, state and local governments, state and local program directors, and researchers. The workgroup urges federal policymakers to take immediate action, as defined, in these key areas: federal support, training, and technical assistance to state and local agencies; federal courts and prisons; behavioral health workforce development; federal research, evaluation, and coordination; and juvenile justice.
|
Encourage further dissemination and implementation of evidence-informed and promising diversion (pre-arrest, pre-trial, post-adjudication, and short-term crisis facilities) responses, such as law enforcement, court-based, and jail-based responses. The Consensus Workgroup recognizes that existing federal efforts exist in this area and strongly supports their expansion through training and technical assistance through state grant-making agencies to service providers.

Immigration is near the top of the list of issues Americans find the most worrying. That's according to a recent poll conducted for NPR by Ipsos. Views on immigration diverge sharply depending on people's party affiliation, where in the country they live, and whether they know people born outside the United States.
