Perinatal Social Work Practice in Health Care Settings applies the NASW Standards for Social Work Practice in Health Settings to the specialty of perinatal practice. Perinatal social workers routinely provide psychosocial services to families related to diagnosis of a medical condition for mother, baby, or both. For perinatal social workers, the patient can be infant(s), child, and/or biological mother. The focus of intervention is the patient, infant/child’s parents, caregivers, and family. A perinatal social worker may also provide psychosocial services to families when there is not a medical diagnosis but there is indication of social needs or social support needs. A unique characteristic of perinatal social work is the initial and ongoing focus on the parent-infant-family unit. Review the Practice Perspective to understand the types of issues that perinatal social workers address and the typical work settings for perinatal social workers.
Given the prevalence of FASD and its far-reaching impact throughout the lifespan, social workers across the spectrum of health, education, child welfare, and criminal justice settings have a role to play in the identification, referral, and delivery of services to individuals and families affected by FASD. Use this reference tool to access the latest resources for enhancing your understanding, competency, and practice skills around FASD.

Refer to the Code for guidance on the everyday professional conduct of social workers.
The NASW Code of Ethics states that social workers should facilitate informed participation by the public in shaping social policy. As facilitators, social workers should strive to be knowledgeable enough about the political process to educate the public about the exercise of their political power. Exercising the right to vote is one of the most powerful ways that we advocate for our profession’s mission and support the public to shape the policies and institutions that affect them.
