The first issue of NASW's new bimonthly magazine, Social Work Advocates, which replaces the NASW News, is now available online. Read stories on how school workers help prevent school violence, on Fordham's annual trip to Haiti, on the effects of digital devices and social media on today's youth, and on the importance of mental health treatment in the criminal justice system.
Get the Tools and Know-How to Mobilize Voters and Overcome Voting Challenges
This year's mid-term elections are critical for the social work workforce and the issues and populations social workers care about. Take NASW-accredited webinars on how to motivate millennials to vote and on how to overcome voting challenges and barriers faced by low-income people, ethnic minorities, senior citizens, and current and formerly incarcerated people.
Each year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) Voice Awards recognize individuals as well as producers and writers in film and television who have done an excellent job of educating the public about mental health and addiction issues. This year, particular emphasis was placed on suicide prevention and drug addiction. Together, NASW, the NASW California Chapter, and the NASW Foundation are a major sponsor of the SAMHSA Voice Awards. NASW made a big impact on this year's awards, with past NASW President Suzanne Dworak-Peck presenting an award and doing an interview on NASW's behalf.

The United States has been in the flux of education reform. Education reform is the intended goal of changing education, perceived as a social good. Although most education reform takes place at the local level, since the advent of compulsory education in 1918, the politics of education have been germane to local, state, and federal education politics. Contemporarily, the politics of education reform has shifted toward a demand for greater school choice. Education reform has become part of a trend toward privatization of large public entities, particularly when it comes to control, financing, and organization of public school systems. The pressing issue surrounding education reform today is the subject of school choice. School choice depends on market-based reform measures in the form of private schools, charter schools, funding following students, school management flexibility, and the process of money following students.

Ask Your Representative to Co-sponsor H.R. 1484, the Social Worker Safety Act
It takes only a few minutes to advocate for your safety on the job. Send a pre-written email or letter to your representatives through NASW's Advocacy listserv that asks them to sign on to the Social Worker Safety Act. The act addresses your safety needs by
- Establishing a Social Worker Safety Grant Program within the Department of Health and Human Services to fund state efforts to improve safety measures for social workers.
- Allowing these grants to be used to purchase safety equipment, make facility improvements, facilitate safety training programs, provide support services for social workers who have been victims of violence, and track incident data to mitigate future offenses against social workers.
