The Congressional Black Caucus has partnered with mental health professionals to address racial disparities in mental health access and the increasing rates of suicide among black youth. In April 2019, the Congressional Black Caucus formed the Emergency Taskforce on Black Youth Suicide and Mental Health with Rep. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) as the chair. Among the taskforce’s goals are to convene experts in Washington, DC, and across the United States to collect actionable information; educate members of Congress and staff on mental illness and suicide in youths; and develop legislative recommendations for Congress. In July, Rep. Watson Coleman introduced H.RES. 480, Acknowledging the Racial Disparities in Diagnosing and Treating Mental Health Among Youth in Communities of Color. NASW supports this resolution as part of a commitment to social justice under the health and behavioral health equity priority.

Undoing Racism: How the Social Work Profession is Working Toward Healing and Equality
Social Work Advocates August/September 2019 Issue
(NASW membership includes magazine subscription.)
Institutional racism persists in the United States, affecting many people in communities of color. While nobody has all of the answers, the social work profession has been working to achieve equality and healing.
September is fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASD) awareness month, an opportunity to highlight social work’s critical role in participating in FASD assessment and referrals, providing FASD-informed services, and advocating for individuals and families living with FASDs. It is also a reminder and a call to action: Primary prevention of alcohol use during pregnancy can reduce the prevalence of FASDs. Put prevention into practice by screening clients for risky alcohol use, talking to women about risky alcohol use, and by clearly communicating the importance of avoiding alcohol during pregnancy.

Activity Description
According to the World Health Organization, social determinants of health (SDOH) are “the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age.” There is increasing awareness that SDOH affect physical and mental health outcomes. Understanding an individual’s SDOH can help uncover social and behavioral factors that impact their health. This discussion will address the impact of SDOH for improving overall health, and for reducing health disparities that are often rooted in social and economic disadvantages.
