Voter participation is a social work issue, as indicated in the NASW Code of Ethics standards 6.02: Public Participation and 6.04: Social and Political Action. NASW is working with organizations such as Rock the Vote, Young Invincibles, and the Brennan Center for Justice to increase voter registration and turnout, build young people’s political power, protect voting rights, and shield the vote from hacks and breakdowns. In September and October, NASW will replay previously recorded webinars on how to motivate millennials to vote and on how to overcome voting challenges and barriers faced by low-income people, ethnic minorities, senior citizens, and currently and formerly incarcerated people. Each presentation includes a live introduction with guest speakers and live Q&A discussion. The first webinar is scheduled for September 20:
Challenges for Voting Rights in America
Wednesday, September 20, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. ET
Fee: Free (no CE credit)
Description: Touching on the historical context of gaining access to the ballot by African Americans and women, this webinar looks at the threat to voting rights for Hispanics, college students, and African Americans for the upcoming mid-term elections in 2018 and the presidential election of 2020.
In August, Global Tech sent 10,000 clinical social workers (CSWs) who are Medicare Part B providers the results of a Comparative Billing Report (CBR) for Licensed Clinical Social Workers. Many CSWs are concerned that social workers are being inappropriately compared to psychiatrists in the report. The sentence in the introduction stating that CSWs bill more than psychiatrists has been identified as an introductory statement by Global Tech and not as a statement of wrongdoing on the part of CSWs. According to Global Tech, the data in the charts provided for each individual in the report only compares an individual CSW performance with that of other CSWs in their state and nationally. NASW has been unsuccessful in contacting the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) for information and will continue to seek information from them. Global Tech is a firm contracted by CMS to conduct CBRs on a variety of services and provider types.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services is removing Social Security numbers from Medicare cards to protect the identity of beneficiaries. Read this member-only Practice Alert for the latest information about the New Medicare Card initiative and to learn how you can help your clients obtain and use their cards.

Health & Social Work
Individuals with subthreshold psychotic experiences are at increased risk for suicidal thoughts and behavior, similar to those with schizophrenia and other psychotic disorders. This may be explained by shared risk factors such as heightened stress sensitivity or low self-esteem. Understanding the nature of this relationship could inform suicide prevention in social work practice. In this study, authors examined the relationship between self-reported auditory hallucinations and suicidal thoughts, plans, and attempts, in a nonclinical sample of young adults, controlling for scores on the Psychological Stress Index and Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Auditory hallucinations were associated with approximately double the odds of suicidal ideation and plans and four times the odds for suicide attempts. This relationship was not explained by stress sensitivity or self-esteem, which were independently related to hallucinations and suicidality, respectively. Subthreshold auditory hallucinations may be a useful indicator of suicide risk. This association may represent a clinically significant relationship that may be addressed through social work interventions intended to alleviate stress sensitivity or improve self-esteem.

A new study finds that recent life events can influence depressive symptoms differently in adolescent girls, depending on how the brain responds to winning and losing.
The findings, published in the journal Biological Psychiatry: Cognitive Neuroscience and Neuroimaging, suggest that a strong brain response to winning boosts the beneficial impact of positive experiences on symptoms, whereas a strong response to losing intensifies the detrimental impact of negative experiences on symptoms.

Most of us trust the doctors and hospitals to figure out what medications our aging parents need to treat their various, sometimes complex medical conditions. But there is a problem with all that trust. It is not uncommon for medication intended for a temporary problem to continue to be prescribed endlessly. Your loved one can end up taking medication he or she does not need, but no one notices.
