Obtaining a credential is the next progression in a social worker's professional career. Beyond the educational degree and professional license, credentials are a voluntary pursuit. Voluntary credentials denote professional commitment and achievement and represent a "license plus" feature of certifying knowledge and experience that meets or exceeds excellence in social work at the national level.
- Holders of NASW professional social work credentials and advanced practice specialty credentials become part of the most widely recognized social work organization in the nation.
- Credentialed social workers are recognized as having in-depth knowledge, proven work experience, leadership capacity, competence, and dedication to the social work profession.
- Credential holders agree to a critical review process that strives to measure adherence to the NASW Code of Ethics, NASW Standards for Continuing Professional Education, and national practice standards consistent with the area of specialized social work practice.
- Some employers seek highly credentialed professionals to fill key leadership positions within their organizations and agencies or factor voluntary credentials in their salary scales.
Featured NASW Credentials (MSW Level):
- ACHP-SW – Advanced Certified Hospice & Palliative Care Social Worker
- C-ASWCM – Certified Advanced Social Work Case Manager

Power operates as a dynamic force that leaves no area of life untouched, influencing individuals, families, communities, and institutions. Despite its great influence on society, professionals working in human services are often oblivious to their own power and privilege, their impact on the therapeutic relationship, and how the lack of acknowledgment and dialogue contributes to the marginalization of certain individuals and groups.

Following the 2016 Presidential election, NASW delivered to the new administration and the 115th Congress a comprehensive transition document, Advancing the American Agenda: How the Social Work Profession Will Help. The document outlines priority areas where social workers play a significant role in addressing social challenges and advancing the broader American Agenda. Selected statements are featured here.
One
solution to chronic homelessness is an intervention known as permanent
supportive housing, which combines affordable housing and a tailored
package of supportive services that help people achieve housing stability, get
connected to health care and other social services, and improve their health
and social outcomes. Research shows that permanent supportive housing not
only ends homelessness for people with the most severe challenges, but also
reduces the use of emergency services and lowers public costs.
