Social workers help to address today’s pressing social issues, from mental health, addiction, and homelessness, to immigration, gun violence, sexual and domestic violence, and more. We need your help to get legislation passed that will advance the profession and social justice. Read below to view current Congressional cosponsors of each legislation and to contact your representatives. Thank you.

This bipartisan legislation enhances Medicare beneficiaries’ access to mental health services and boosts the rate that Medicare reimburses clinical social workers (CSWs) to 85% of the physician fee schedule. Currently, CSWs are reimbursed at only 75% of the physician fee schedule, the lowest payment rate of any mental health clinician in this major federal program. Email your lawmakers to urge them to cosponsor the Improving Access to Mental Health Act. View current Congressional cosponsors.
This legislation requires organizations that employ health care and social service workers to have a workplace violence prevention plan in place. Email your lawmakers to tell them to cosponsor this House bill. View current Congressional cosponsors.
This legislation ends family separations, strengthens protections for children and families, and provides standards to ensure that government funds are not used to traumatize or harm asylum seekers. Follow this and related legislation, find resources, and take action via NASW’s Child Migrant Protection Toolkit. View current Congressional cosponsors.
NASW is working with coalition partners, including Brady, to encourage cosponsors on S. 42, the Background Check Expansion Act. This legislation establishes new background check requirements for firearm transfers between private parties (i.e., unlicensed individuals). Specifically, it prohibits a firearm transfer between private parties unless a licensed gun dealer, manufacturer, or importer first takes possession of the firearm to conduct a background check. S. 42 would close the loophole and require background checks for private gun sales across the country. Email your Senators to urge them to cosponsor this urgently needed bill.
