Full Anti-Discrimination Language Stays in Texas Social Work Code of Conduct
24,000+ Sign Online Petition Protesting Removal of Protections for LGBTQIA+ and Disabled Clients
The Texas Behavioral Health Executive Council (BHEC) voted unanimously last week to keep language in the state’s Social Work Code of Conduct that prohibits social workers from discriminating against clients based on the client’s sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or disability. The reversal of the October 12 decision to remove the nondiscrimination language would not have happened without the collective strength and unity of voices from social workers nationwide, countless advocacy groups, federal and state legislators, and all others voicing their grave concern against the changes. Your advocacy works!

National Social Work Organizations Oppose Elimination of Texas LGBTQ and Disability Protections
NASW and the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) condemn the removal by the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners of a rule prohibiting social workers from discriminating against clients based on the client’s sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, or disability. This regulatory change, enacted in October at the request of Texas Gov. Greg Abbott without any public comment, creates significant barriers to mental health and social care services for vulnerable Texans.
Oppose Changes to the Code of Conduct for Social Workers in Texas
The Texas Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) is outraged that the Texas State Board of Social Worker Examiners (TSBSWE) accepted language from the Governor of Texas removing protections against discrimination for disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression from the Social Work Code of Conduct.

Most Americans Believe LGBTQ People Are Legally Protected From Discrimination — They're Not
USA Today
As protections for LGBTQ people enter the domain of the United States' highest court, the vast majority of non-LGBTQ Americans believe that discrimination against LGBTQ should be illegal.
The catch, according to GLAAD's 2020 edition of its annual Accelerating Acceptance survey: An overwhelming number of Americans, regardless of sexuality or gender identity, believe LGBTQ people have federal protections against discrimination that are, in reality, not available to them.
