Last week, NASW Chief Executive Officer Angelo McClain, PhD, LICSW, delivered a keynote address at the International Federation of Social Workers (IFSW) Africa Region Conference in Kampala, Uganda. McClain explained the differences between transactional and transformative leadership, noting that transactional leadership is about “rank, position, follower compliance, leader authority, and has a short-term focus.” “Transformational leadership,” he remarked, “is about character, competence, commitment, follower development, leader’s values and has a long-term focus.” McClain further addressed four principles for achieving transformation.
Assault weapons, like the AR-15, are the weapon of choice for mass shooters in America because they are uniquely lethal. Brady led the fight to pass the original assault weapons ban. Now, we urgently need to renew the ban before more people are killed. If your House representative still hasn’t signed on to H.R.1296 - Assault Weapons Ban of 2019, send them this prewritten email, or personalize it, urging them to cosponsor the bill. We’re just short of getting the ban renewed in the House.

Grounded in black feminist theory, intersectionality focuses on multiple interacting systems of power and oppression that simultaneously privilege some and disadvantage others along multiple social positionalities (culturally defined status categories). This special issue of Social Work Research seeks submissions focused on (a) applying and theorizing core components of “strong” intersectionality in social work research and (b) demonstrating the application of research using intersectionality frameworks and methods, within different social justice arenas or social work practice areas. The journal welcomes contributions with global perspectives and systematic reviews on intersectionality in social work practice or education. Manuscripts are due by December 31, 2019.
If you are interested in being a reviewer for the special issue of Social Work Research on intersectionality, please contact Dr. Jiwatram-Negrón at jiwatram@asu.edu with a copy of your curriculum vitae (CV) highlighting relevant experience on intersectionality. Please reference the special issue in your email’s subject line.

Social Work Research
A number of protective factors associated with being American Indian exist; however, research shows that American Indians tend to experience higher rates of depressive symptoms than individuals of other racial or ethnic groups. Although prior research has examined sociocultural predictors of American Indian depression, less is known about the influence of familial functioning. This is particularly true for American Indian emerging adults who grew up in stepfamilies. This study examined retrospective data from 203 American Indians raised in stepfamilies on whether perceived coparenting between biological parents (post-stepfamily formation) was related to depression in emerging adulthood.
