The 2019 campaign will honor contributions of social workers and put the spotlight on social work salaries. You can gain momentum for the campaign’s message now by adding the “Elevate Social Work” logo to your email signature line, sharing the logo and campaign talking points on your social media, and purchasing “Elevate Social Work” themed merchandise for yourself, colleagues, friends, and family, and for Social Work Month celebrations in March.
NASW Press is publishing a special issue of Social Work journal on self-care and seeks manuscripts on self-care in social work practice. Social Work is one of the top-rated social science journals in the world, read and referenced by colleagues, faculty, students, and others in the human services field. Send us your papers by December 15, 2018. All NASW members receive a free online subscription to Social Work with NASW membership.

Quality education is acknowledged as an important investment in supporting the healthy development of South Africa’s children and in the fight against poverty. This article argues that quality education in South Africa should be supported by a team of professionals who work together in a classroom setting to support students from disadvantaged backgrounds. As one of the professions primarily concerned with issues of social justice, poverty, and development, social work is ideally suited to such a setting. This article presents findings from a project that was a joint initiative between the University of Fort Hare (UFH) Department of Social Work; the UFH Early Childhood Centre of Excellence; and the Division of Social Work, Leadership, and Public Policy at Wheelock College. It aimed to investigate the need for social workers in the early childhood development centers (ECDCs) and schools of Eastern Cape, South Africa. The survey found that 94 percent of participants felt that there was a need for social workers to be actively involved in a school setting, with students needing support and guidance for a range of social challenges. In conclusion, it was found that there is a need for social workers in the ECDCs and schools of the Eastern Cape.

Gina Ortiz Jones, a Democratic candidate in the 23rd Congressional District in Texas, faced a similar question, but for her it happened out in the open.

A more accurate measure of the poverty rate, based on how much people consume, highlights the dramatic decline in poverty over the past four decades, a fact that is missed by the official government poverty numbers. This can be visualized in a new poverty dashboard developed by professors James Sullivan of the University of Notre Dame and Bruce Meyer of the Harris School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago.

Productivity in the United States’ health care industry is declining — and has been ever since World War II. As the cost of treating patients continues to rise, life expectancy in America is beginning to fall. But there is mounting evidence that artificial intelligence (AI) can reverse the downward spiral in productivity by automating the system’s labyrinth of labor-intensive, inefficient administrative tasks, many of which have little to do with treating patients.
