In electing Joe Biden, the American people have cast their vote for an inclusive economy, urgently needed social investments, and long overdue civil rights protections. “We are thrilled at the election of Joe Biden. He is an experienced unifier and problem-solver with a deep understanding of and commitment to the causes that are at the heart of the social work profession, a profession he values,” said Angelo McClain, PhD, LICSW, Chief Executive Officer of NASW. “We can’t wait to roll up our sleeves and work with him and the administration he assembles to advance America’s shared agenda.”

NASW Joins Amicus Brief to Defend Affordable Care Act in U.S. Supreme Court
NASW joined in an amicus brief led by the National Women’s Law Center, National Partnership for Women and Families, Black Women’s Health Imperative, American Medical Association, and 76 other organizations committed to women’s rights and racial justice that was filed in the U.S. Supreme Court, supporting California’s defense of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) in California v. Texas, consolidated with Texas v. California. The brief explains the devastating impact that striking down the ACA would have on women and their families—and particularly on women and families of color. The brief emphasizes that the COVID-19 pandemic and impending economic recession make the ACA’s protections even more critical for women’s health and economic security. Opening arguments in the Supreme Court began on November 10.

NASW Participates in Amicus Brief Filed in Case
Last week the U.S. Supreme Court heard arguments in Fulton v. City of Philadelphia, a case concerning the rights of gays and lesbians to foster children. NASW and several other child welfare/adoption organizations participated in the Fulton v. City of Philadelphia amicus brief that was filed in the U.S. Supreme Court in August 2020. The brief asserts that certifying all qualified foster families, including qualified LGBTQ foster parents, is necessary to address the shortage of available foster parents and to ensure that all children find permanent, loving families.
