Last week the Trump administration issued a final rule that tightens work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), also known as food stamps. Under the rule, which takes effect on April 1, 2020, states must demonstrate a minimum unemployment rate of 6 percent for a county to receive a waiver from the time limit for benefits. Jurisdictions that would no longer qualify for waivers include high-unemployment and economically hard-hit areas. “This callous rule will do nothing to promote employment or self-sufficiency,” said Angelo McClain, NASW CEO. “It demonstrates utter disregard for the facts, which are that able-bodied adults, due to economic circumstances beyond their control, are unable to find a job. … Exemptions need to be available for at-risk individuals, such as youth aging out of foster care, veterans, and formerly incarcerated individuals seeking to regain employment.”
NASW’s member research study ends December 13, 2019. Don’t miss your chance to share with us your perceptions, challenges, and needs as social work professionals. Those who complete the survey will be entered in a drawing for the opportunity to win $300 towards any NASW National or Chapter continuing education credit, in person or online. ALL social workers are invited to participate. Take the survey now.
Read NASW’s Comments on the Priorities
In September, NASW submitted comments to the Administration for Community Living (ACL) regarding priorities for the Elder Justice Coordinating Council (EJCC). These comments addressed the ways in which the council benefits NASW and the social work profession, as well as how the EJCC could benefit the elder justice community as a whole; how the EJCC could support the creation and enhancement of state-level systems of services and supports; and how the EJCC could measure its impact and effectiveness on state systems and on survivors of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation. ACL welcomes public comments on the EJCC through December 31, 2019.

Description
Health care is not delivering health for many Americans, and there is increasing recognition in the need for health care to be more attentive and responsive to individuals' social needs – and to play a role in structural change to strengthen communities and address health inequities. In 2018, the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) launched a consensus study on the types of activities and care models that can integrate health and social care, and on the workforce, data, financing, and research needs to be addressed to advance the field and maximize impact. The committee's report, Integrating Social Care into the Delivery of Health Care: Moving Upstream to Improve the Nation’s Health, was released in September 2019. Learn about the report directly from two members of the consensus study's interdisciplinary committee: Diana Mason (PhD, RN, FAAN, Senior Policy Service Professor, School of Nursing, George Washington University, and Chair of CHaSCI National Advisory Board), and Tamara Cadet (PhD, LICSW, MPH, Associate Professor, Simmons School of Social Work).

The uptick in school shootings has generated much debate in our society over methods to reduce this growing and tragic problem. The increase in school shootings is real. “Specifically, school shootings increased from 23 to 179 between the 1980s and 1990s and also increased from 179 to 245 between the 1990s and 2013." High-profile school shootings have generated a national dialogue resulting in calls for remedy in the form of more mental health providers in schools, greater gun control measures, and more guns in schools to counter potential or active shooters. Whereas the “guns in schools” debate is highly controversial, the need for more mental health services is not.

Many of the immigration policies enacted by the administration of U.S. president Donald Trump in the last year have been so shocking they’ve made headlines worldwide: family separation, zero tolerance, detained children, to name a few.
But not all of Trump’s efforts to restrict immigration have been so dramatic.

Social workers in Utah schools say they face difficult problems on a daily basis: students dealing with trauma, mental health problems, and other social needs.
Now, in what the State Board of Education says is an effort to attract more people to the job, a new rule changes the licensing that a social worker has to have to work in a school setting.
