One of the most frequently asked questions from NASW members is, "What are you doing to advocate for clinical social workers?" In 2017, for example, NASW advocated for clinical social workers who received 2017 Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) negative payment adjustments from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), requesting that CMS review clinical social work feedback reports from members for errors. CMS honored the request and discovered errors had been made on feedback reports submitted to NASW from members in Pennsylvania. Those negative payment adjustments from Pennsylvania were reversed. In addition to quality measures, NASW also advocated for clinical social workers in the areas of mental health parity, Social Security Disability eligibility determinations, ICD-11, CPT codes, work and practice expense values, skilled nursing facilities, reimbursement rates, and Health and Behavioral Assessment and Intervention (HBAI) codes.

Despite advocacy from NASW and other stakeholders, data collection on gender identity has been excluded yet again in the 2019 version of the National Survey of Older Americans Act Participants (NSOAAP). The NSOAAP yields important data that improves social service delivery to older adults in home and community settings. NASW urges the Administration for Community Living to enable transgender older adults to self-identify in the NSOAAP.

Created by the NASW Legal Defense Fund as an exclusive online reference tool for NASW members, the Amicus Brief Database is a rich storehouse of legal information on a wide variety of policy and practice issues of concern to social workers and their clients. The Amicus Brief Database contains downloadable copies of almost 300 amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs filed by NASW or on behalf of NASW for the past three decades. Friend of the court briefs are accepted by courts as an aid to understanding aspects of issues that may not be fully addressed by the parties to the litigation, or where specialized knowledge may be helpful in reaching a conclusion in high profile cases.
NASW recently updated its aging resources flyer. Use this handy tool to find resources throughout NASW that can enhance your practice in aging. Pass it on to social work colleagues, staff, and students to inform them about NASW's aging-related products and services.
NASW's blog — socialworkblog.org — is a hot spot for NASW news, commentary, and activities —

SocialWorkersSpeak.org gives you a chance to influence how the entertainment industry and news media depict the social work profession and issues social workers care about. For example, if you see or read something in the news that makes you proud to be a social worker, or concerns you, share your opinion.
This study examined the age difference in the relationship between social capital in the form of cognitive (trust, family support) and structural aspects (social membership, activity frequency) and life satisfaction of older Chinese people in a rural area. Data were collected from 398 elders in the rural area of China by quota sampling. Hierarchical regression analysis was used to realize the objective. Trust and family support were significantly positively associated with life satisfaction, whereas social membership was strongly negatively associated with life satisfaction. Activity frequency did not show any significance in relationship with life satisfaction. Age difference existed in the associations of trust and activity frequency with life satisfaction. Age difference in the relationship of trust and activity frequency with life satisfaction of elderly Chinese people in the rural area did exist. It is recommended that the measure be refined and programs and services be provided according to the hierarchical needs of older adults in different age groups.
The profession should be
attainable for the best and brightest, but because of extraordinary educational
debt, barriers have developed for students hoping to become social workers.
Whereas we have been pleased with the passage of loan forgiveness
programs that include certain groups of social workers, more programs that
focus on the social work profession are needed. According to a 2010 report
released by NASW and the NASW Center for Workforce Studies, educational
debt is one of the factors that influence recruitment and retention in social work.
The survey found that debt burdens ranged from less than $5,000 to
$100,000 — with 52 percent owing between $10,000 and $39,999. More
than a third of respondents (36 percent) with educational debt earned social
work salaries of less than $40,000 a year (NASW & NASW Center for
Workforce Studies, 2010). Only 13 percent earned more than $70,000.
Twenty-five percent had debt more than twice their annual salaries. The U.S.
Public Interest Research Group has stated that as many as 37 percent of public
and 55 percent of private college four-year graduates have too much debt to
manage as a starting social worker (Swarthout, 2006). This makes a social
work degree an impossible choice for many students. The debt tends to be
more burdensome for social work graduates than others because their salaries
tend to be lower.

The case arrives with all the routine of a traffic citation: A baby boy, just 4 days old and exposed to heroin in his mother's womb, is shuddering through withdrawal in intensive care, his fate now here in a shabby courthouse that hosts a parade of human misery.
The parents nod off as Judge Marilyn Moores explains the legal process, and tests arrive back showing both continue to use heroin.
