Will This be the Year We Finally Begin to Dismantle Systemic Racism in the United States?
In the Orlando Sentinel, the CEO’s of NASW, the American Psychiatric Association and the American Psychological Association committed as mental health leaders to end the pandemic of racism. Dr. Angelo Mcclain, Dr. Saul Levin and Dr. Arthur C. Evans, Jr., wrote, “As mental-health professionals, we’ve seen firsthand how devastating systemic racism can be on the mental health of people of color. Racial minorities are more likely to experience stress, anxiety and depression than whites. Yet they’re much less likely to have access to adequate mental health care — and thus often struggle to cope.

The COVID-19 pandemic is only the most recent case study in racial health disparity. Although Black Americans make up 13% of the population, they’ve accounted for 25% of coronavirus patients.

These disparities have persisted for generations. Yet our nation has done little to address them. Our three organizations vow to change that.”
Are Racist Thoughts Standing in the Way of Your Ethical Obligations as a Social Worker?
An Important Message About Racism
NASW’s Vice President of Ethics, Diversity, and Inclusion Dawn M. Hobdy, LICSW, recommends action steps for social workers whose thoughts or beliefs make it challenging or impossible to adhere to their ethical obligations. “NASW values its members. We believe in our members. We are committed to serving our members,” says Hobdy. “We are also here for those who may be struggling.”

Child Welfare Social Workers Are Essential Workers, Too
Child welfare social workers are responding to immediate unannounced home visits without knowing if someone in the home has been diagnosed with COVID-19 or has been exposed. Families stuck at home due to the coronavirus may be experiencing higher levels of stress, which can lead to child abuse and neglect. Child welfare social workers are essential for our communities because abused children are a vulnerable population who need social workers to advocate to keep them in a safe home environment.
