Social Workers Must Help Dismantle Systems of Oppression and Fight Racism Within Social Work Profession
While the national conversation remains critically focused on ending police brutality, racism persists in many other institutions. The child welfare system has often more rigorously regulated and castigated Black, Brown, and Indigenous families. Medical racism, which has origins in slavery and eugenics, has led to modern-day health disparities and inequities in health care access and treatment. The oppressive collateral consequences resulting from mass incarceration, the War on Drugs, and the school-to-prison pipeline have exacerbated economic inequalities in Black, Brown, and Indigenous communities. Social workers have had roles in perpetuating these harmful social systems, and we cannot ignore this history. However, social work also has a major role in creating a more anti-racist society. By using the Code of Ethics as a guidepost, social workers can help dismantle systems of oppression, take action against white supremacy culture, and be leaders in the movement for racial justice.

Each One, Register One
Social workers, with their ethical obligation to “facilitate informed participation by the public in shaping social policies and institutions,” play a crucial role in engaging individuals and communities in the election process. Collectively, America’s 700,000+ social workers reach millions of people every day. Imagine the impact we could have if each social worker, including you, commits to get at least one other person to register to vote.

Training Provides Guidance to Change Child Welfare Practice, Promote Better Outcomes
Integrating Adolescent Brain Development Into Child Welfare Practice With Older Youth
The brains of youth do not fully develop until they are in their twenties. NASW, with support from the Annie E. Casey Foundation, is offering training to social workers and other professionals on adolescent brain development. Incorporate what you learn into your practice to help adolescents aging out of foster care have better outcomes. The curriculum combines findings from brain science research and knowledge related to trauma, implicit bias, and building social capital to promote strategies for practitioners to more effectively work with older youth who experience the child welfare system. Download the curriculum, audio and videos, handouts, and PowerPoint slides.

Kenosha Protesters Accuse City of Having Different Laws for Protesting Police Brutality and Supporting Police
Newsweek
Four protesters in Kenosha, Wisconsin, are suing the city for violating their First Amendment rights by enacting a curfew, a policy they say didn't apply to people who were out vocalizing their support for law enforcement. The Kenosha County Sheriff's Department implemented a curfew after protests erupted over the officer-involved shooting of Jacob Blake, a black man who remains paralyzed in the hospital.

US Racial Inequality Just as Deadly as COVID-19 if Not More, Report Suggests
CNN
Even amid a pandemic, life expectancy among White people in the United States far exceeds what Black people have experienced every year, according to new research.
