Rare Heart Conditions a Danger to Teen Athletes
from Seattle Post-Intelligencer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The collapse of two teenaged basketball players in less than a week - one of whom died - highlights the fact that even young, seemingly healthy athletes may have hidden defects that can strike with little warning. Heart specialists acknowledge that it's extremely rare for a young athlete to collapse or die after physical exertion, but say that an undiagnosed cardiac condition is the most likely cause. More

Simple Test May Spot Concussion in Athletes
from Reuters    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A simple, inexpensive test of reaction time may help determine on the sidelines whether an athlete has suffered a concussion, according to research released today that will be presented in April at the American Academy of Neurology's 62nd annual meeting in Toronto. Research has shown that reaction time is slower after a concussion - even as long as several days after other symptoms have resolved. However, tests currently used to measure reaction time rely on computers and special software. That rules out their use in real-time situations such as games.  More

Figure Skating is Beautiful on the Ice, Brutal on the Body
from Houston Chronicle    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
While figure skating is not a contact sport, like football or ice hockey, the injuries can be just as brutal. "Ice skating is so artistic, people view it as closer to golf as opposed to ice hockey," said Dr. Mark Adickes, medical director of Memorial Hermann's Sports Medicine Institute. "But when it comes to injuries, it's closer to hockey. Skaters reach an elite level at such a young age and exert so much power that injuries after their careers are over are common, especially spine and hip injuries."  More
