Female Athletic Trainers Making Strides
ESPN
When she was in school studying to be an athletic trainer, Alyssa Alpert took a trip to Germany. There, she spent the day with FC Bayern Munich, and met with an athletic trainer working with the team. "Walking to the training facility and looking over the pitch," Alpert said, "it was one of the most amazing things." Alpert, now 26, has been named the head athletic trainer for the New York Cosmos, a legendary team that has been resurrected and is going into its second season in the North American Soccer League.

Schools Use Computer Test to Detect Concussions Among Young Athletes
St. Louis Post-Dispatch via Fort Worth Star-Telegram
When kids are involved in contact sports like soccer and football, there's a common parental fear of injury, and even when youngsters are at home just playing — chasing, roughhousing, jumping on trampolines and the like — worries are constant because, let's face it, it's easy to get hurt. And while most injuries are readily apparent, concussions are particularly scary, because it's often very hard to discern when one has occurred.

Yahoo Sports
While New Jersey didn't pass Janet's Law until this year, requiring all schools to have external defibrillators on hand at athletic events come September, it's a good thing Montvale (N.J.) Pascack Hills High purchased three such devices seven years ago, because one saved a 15-year-old track athlete's life. Pascack Hills junior shot putter and discus thrower Anthony Cortazzo collapsed on the track during practice, according to reports from WABC-TV and CBS 2.

Switch to Regular Pillow Provides Relief for Pitcher
Yahoo Sports
Getting a comfortable night's sleep is among the most important factors to achieving happiness and sustaining productivity in life. Though often sacrificed due to travel and quick turnarounds, a comfortable and ideally complete night's sleep is also the basis for surviving baseball's 162-game schedule that leaves little extra time for rest, recovery and rehabilitation. For 29-year-old reliever Edward Mujica, a good night's rest simply wasn't happening regularly enough in 2013.

A 2007 paper in the Journal of Athletic Training looked at softball injuries from 1988-2004 using the NCAA injury surveillance system. Over the 16 years of data collection, the rate of injury was 1.6 times higher in games than in practices (4.3 versus 2.7 injuries per 1,000 athlete-exposures).
