After hitting Capitol Hill with NATA in February, Greg Janik, MS, ATC, followed up his visit by requesting a meeting with his congressman at his local office. Janik and three athletic training students met with Rep. Christopher Carney (D-PA) to discuss the athletic training profession and to ask for his support for H.R. 1137. Janik also invited Carney to tour the King's College athletic training facilities. Janik's story is a great example of persistence, and his effort has earned him the Grassroots Star of the Week!  More

Sickle Cell Testing, Unless Athletes Balk
from Inside Higher Ed    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The Division I Legislative Council of the National Collegiate Athletic Association approved a new rule Tuesday mandating that all athletes be tested for the sickle cell trait. The rule, however, allows athletes to opt out of testing if they sign a waiver “releasing an institution from liability." The sickle cell trait is found in about 8 percent of African-Americans, and in less than 1 percent of white Americans. During intense exercise, the red blood cells of those with the trait can elongate and change shape, blocking blood flow in vessels and damaging muscles such as the heart. Eight college football players have died from acute rhabdomyolysis, as a result of carrying the sickle cell trait, in the past decade. Some of these players were unaware that they had the trait.  More

Blood Spinning Promising; Studies Inconclusive
from the San Francisco Chronicle via the Seattle Post Intelligencer    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A treatment for common sports injuries that involves shooting the patient's own blood directly into the wound is gaining popularity among professional and recreational athletes, but doctors say that while the therapy is promising, it's hardly a miracle cure. Sports medicine doctors expect a renewed rush of interest in the treatment after Tiger Woods said last week that he's used platelet-rich plasma therapy, sometimes referred to as "blood spinning," to help recover from injuries to his left knee and right Achilles tendon.  More

Missouri High School Athletes May Get Heads Up on Head Injuries
from KFVS12    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
NATA has contacted this news source to thank them for the important coverage and remind them of appropriate terminology to describe athletic trainers.

The state of Missouri wants high school athletes to have a heads up on head injuries. A new bill would require athletes to take a cognitive pre-test before participating as well as take extra steps to prevent injured players from returning to action. Players who receive multiple concussions in a short period of time can suffer from early onset dementia, as well as memory loss and emotional problems.

Pitching a Healthy Game to Kids
from WISHTV8    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Experts are calling pitching injuries in youth baseball an epidemic. How to prevent them is of course the big question. Pitching great Tom Glavine recently watched his son's little league practice, and he had some advice you might be surprised to hear. "You know, I wouldn't let a kid at eleven years old throw a breaking ball. I never threw a breaking ball until I got to high school."  More
