from Appleton Post-Crescent    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The symptoms were all-too-familiar to Sam Darkow. Blurred vision. Random numbness. Throbbing headache. The telltale signs of a concussion. Focus on One Sport Risks Injury
from Children's Medical Center Dallas    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Studies show that repetitive-use injuries are on the rise in young athletes, and a year-round focus on a single sport may be partly to blame. "Intense, full-time efforts in one sport can lead to a lot of the overuse injuries in these children," said Dr. Philip Wilson, a pediatric orthopedic surgeon in the Sports Medicine Center at Children's. "This is damage we used to never see until they were late in high school or even college."  More

Custom Mouthguards Prevent More Injuries
from Vail Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The field of sports dentistry continues to grow as more and more people participate in extreme sports popularized by events such as the X-Games. Sports dentistry is essentially the prevention and treatment of oral and facial injuries. Dental injuries are the most common type of facial injuries for athletes and the majority of these injuries are actually preventable. Young athletes who have a tooth knocked out can anticipate upwards of $20,000 worth of lifetime dental costs associated with just that one tooth. In addition to these expenses, the person can suffer through lost work time, emotional and psychological scars and pain. More
