ATs Educate Military Parents About Risks of TBI in Adolescent Athletes

On March 31, U.S. Naval Academy team physician CAPT. Scott Pyne, MC, USN; Maureen Siburt, MSEd, LAT, ATC; Matthew Virtue, MS, ATC; and Christina Faiver, MS, MEd, ATC gathered at Henderson Hall in Arlington, Va., to inform military parents of the risks of traumatic brain injury in the adolescent athlete. The Tactical Parenting for the iGeneration Parenting Conference held by the Henderson Hall Marine Corps Community Services, Marine and Family Behavioral Health Program was held to increase awareness of important issues teens and adolescents face on a daily basis, one being TBI. This same group will present again to Department of Defense parents working at the Pentagon on May 11. Caitlin M. Colitti, LAT, ATC, CSCS, attended the conference in Virginia and comprised a full recap of the event for NATA.

Judge OKs NFL Concussion Lawsuit Settlement

A federal judge has given final approval to a class-action lawsuit settlement between the National Football League and thousands of former players. The agreement provides up to $5 million per retired player for serious medical conditions associated with repeated head trauma. While the lawsuit was a combination of hundreds of actions brought by more than 5,000 ex-NFL players, the settlement applies to all players who retired on or before July 7, 2014.

    Athletic Trainer's Work Began as Boston Marathon Runners Finished

    The first time Jeri Connor worked in the Boston Marathon medical tent was in 1986. Connor was a student at Bridgewater State University studying to become an athletic trainer. From there, it was something she knew she wanted to keep doing. This year, at the 2015 Boston Marathon was Connor's 28th time working the event.

    Houston Expert to Study Concussions in Teen Female Athletes

    Concussion studies often focus on young men, rather than women, in part because of the injuries sustained in football. But a Memorial Hermann/UTHealth concussion specialist will lead a study funded with a grant from the Moody Endowment. Memorial Hermann says IRONMAN Sports Medicine Institute Sports Concussion Program Director Summer Ott, Psy.D. will focus on the consequences of sport-related concussions on teen women.
