Annual Meeting Fast Fact
"How many hours of work go into planning the Annual Meeting? There are eight committee members who put in probably 200 hours a year, at least. Then 300 or so people reviewed proposals this year, spending six or seven hours apiece. We have three-hour conference calls four or five times a year. And then the committee and a huge team of volunteers spend 18-hour days for a week at the convention itself. What does that total? Thousands and thousands of hours go into planning and hosting the Annual Meeting. Come see what all that work produces!"
-Convention Program Committee Chair Rich Ray, EdD, ATC

Writing in the International Journal of Biomechatronics and Biomedical Robotics, Kean Aw and colleagues in the department of Mechanical Engineering, at The University of Auckland, explain how novel materials known as ionic polymer metallic composites, produce an electrical current when compressed.  More

Flying Without A Net: Cheer Injuries On Rise
from MSNBC    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Cheerleading was at the center of Laura Jackson’s life since she began shaking pom-poms for a pee-wee football team in the third grade. At 14, she dreamed of cheering in high school and then, maybe college. But on the day of tryouts for the freshman high school squad in Livonia, Mich., those plans were shattered. That afternoon, as her turn arrived, she got ready to perform a back tuck, a challenging gymnastics move she'd learned just for tryouts. She eyed her spotter, a girl just three years older than herself, and took a running start across the gymnasium floor before launching into the flip.  More

Prevention, Proper Treatment Are Keys to Enduring Neck Pain
from The Portland Press Herald    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
Neck injuries have recently been in the news when Tiger Woods withdrew for a golf tournament with neck pain and tingling down his right arm. He thought he may have a bulged disc in his neck but an MRI proved that his neck pain was a result of an inflamed joint in his neck. The media is speculating his neck injury may be associated to the November auto accident at his home. What makes the neck so vulnerable to injuries is how the neck works. It holds your head, weighs 10-14 pounds. The neck is also highly flexible so you can look up, down and rotate your head.  More
