Athletic Shoes Can Contribute to Knee Injuries ... And So Can Playing on Artifical Turf

Sports medicine researchers in Canada found that athletic shoes that gripped turf tighter contributed to higher injury rates in football players than shoes that didn't grip as tight. What they supposed was that scientific advances in athletic shoes are the culprit of increased injury rates solely blaming the shoes. What I think from reading the Canadian study is that their research was good but their conclusion may be too far reaching. More

New York Athletic Trainers Introduce Legislative Bills to Update State Practice Act

April 3 and April 12 were big days for athletic trainers across New York State. The culmination of over one year's work and preparation came to fruition when bill S4465 was introduced into the NYS Senate and bill A6678 was introduced into the NYS Assembly on those dates. Behind the scenes, leaders within the New York State Athletic Trainers' Association have worked long hours to draft the specific language of the proposed Practice Act. More

Bill Would Force South Carolina Schools to Be More Careful With Athletes' Concussions

A high school athlete who suffers a concussion will have to get approval from a physician before returning to sports activities, according to a bill being considered by the South Carolina state Senate. The bill, H.3061, has passed the House, but it was amended by a Senate committee. If the full Senate approves the bill, the House must approve the amended version before it goes to Gov. Nikki Haley. It is said it often takes a village to raise a child. Quite often, it seems like it takes several members of that village to treat a pediatric or adolescent athlete with a concussion. As the scholastic year winds down, I would like to discuss the members of the healthcare team who treat concussion and give some idea what the roles of these clinicians may be, so next year parents may have some idea what to expect if their child is treated for a concussion. Doctors Worry About High Injury Rates With Young Athletes

Prescott (Ariz.) High School junior Caitlyn Berg had worked in the athletic training room last year when she decided to enroll in the Medical Professions program at the school. "I thought it would be cool to learn all the actual terminology, what to do for different injuries, learn more about taping and get more hands-on skills," Berg said. "I like interacting with the athletes and doing real hands-on stuff instead of just scenarios. This class gives me a step ahead of everyone else." More
