Proposed Bill Requires Lifesaving EpiPens in Pennsylvania Schools
from Pittsburgh Tribune-Review    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Darby A. Copeland administered epinephrine two or three times last school year to a student who was allergic to peanuts. The teen could barely breathe. “He would have died each time,” said Copeland, executive director of Parkway West Career and Technology Center in Oakdale, Pa. Dr. Lewis Yocum Was Baseball's Medical Superstar
from Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
We did not get the chance to say farewell, and thank you. Dr. Lewis Yocum wanted it that way. He lived his last days the way he lived all of them, with the sincere belief that the spotlight should be on the people he treated, not on the doctor who treated them. The baseball community recoiled in shock last week when the Angels announced the passing of one of the giants of sports medicine. He had touched so many, and yet so few even knew he was sick. More

Gender Gap in Treating Female Athletes
from The Boston Globe    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Chloe O'Connell, 20, of Wellfleet, Mass., has gotten pretty adept at using crutches over the last nine months, as she's waited for the stress fractures in both of her heels to repair themselves. Athletics have always been a crucial part of the runner, biker, swimmer and avid yogi's life. Even now, O'Connell manages to swim an hour a day, despite the walking casts she must wear on both feet and the crutches she uses to get around. That determination and focus may be part of what got her injured in the first place. More

Don't Blame the IT Band
from Heidi Mills    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The IT, or iliotibial band, has developed a pretty bad reputation over the years. This long, thick band of fascia is implicated due to its involvement in the incriminatingly titled, IT band syndrome. This is a condition prevalent in runners and cyclists where pain develops on the lateral knee and is often termed "runner's knee." It is frequently quoted by athletic trainers and physical therapists as being due to a "tight" IT band. But is it really all the fault of the IT band? Or is the IT band simply the scapegoat for problems further along the chain? More

Running Doc: Take a Cautious Approach to Minimalist Running Shoes
from New York Daily News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Barefoot and minimalist running shoes are one of the latest trends in running gear. It's been suggested that this type of footwear can strengthen the muscles that aren't used when wearing traditional running shoes, causing the arch of the foot to become higher and subsequently reduce knee, soft tissue and related injuries. But if you are running well, not injured, and doing the mileage you want, don't change a thing. More
