Public Safety Workshop Focuses on Fitness Testing

The careers in public safety workshop at the 61st NATA Annual Meeting & Clinical Symposia focuses on the fitness tests given to public safety applicants. It also includes annual readiness and fitness testing for firefighters, EMS and law enforcement. Scheduled on June 22, from 1-5 p.m., the workshop teaches attendees how to administer the tests and how to assist employees in improving their fitness at all levels. Phys Ed: Can Pickle Juice Stop Muscle Cramps?

Recently, 10 healthy male college students filed into an exercise laboratory at Brigham Young University in Utah to drink pickle juice. Many people involved in sports are convinced that the briny fluid combats muscle cramping. In a 2008 survey, a quarter of the athletic trainers interviewed said that they regularly dispense pickle juice to cramp-stricken athletes. Many also report that, in their experiences, the stuff quickly brakes the cramping. The athletic trainers have told researchers that they believe the pickle juice must be replenishing the salt and fluids the athletes had lost to sweat. But no laboratory science had verified that theory.  More

Body Checking in Kids' Hockey Triples Serious Injuries

Kids who play on ice hockey teams where body-checking is allowed are three times more likely to sustain a concussion and other severe injuries than those who play in non-checking leagues. Canadian researchers who analyzed injuries in "Pee Wee" (ages 11 and 12) hockey league players published data in today's Journal of the American Medical Association that suggest youth hockey teams would be better off avoiding play that allows players to knock opponents off the ice or into the boards.  More

More Children Requiring Treatment for Sports Overuse Injuries

Dr. James Andrews has logged over 40,000 surgeries and become one of the most preeminent sports physicians in the country. But even he wasn't prepared for something like this. Andrews said that he sees four times as many children suffering from overuse injuries in youth sports than he did five years ago, and more children are going under the knife for chronic sports injuries, according to The New York Times.  More
