In October 2006, the Mechanicsburg Area Senior High School graduate suffered a life-altering concussion during a freshman football "fifth quarter," an after-game practice banned by the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association. Most common in junior high football games, fifth quarters are postgame scrimmages intended to give field play to seventh- and eighth-graders who sit on the bench during regulation.  More

Athletes Have Options To Reduce Risks Associated With Heat
from Marietta Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article

These damaging injuries present with mild headache, photophobia, irritability, confusion, and more noticeably, dizziness or nausea. They involve impairment of the brain, and pose unique challenges for the sports health care professional.  More

Spotters, Padding Employed To Keep Tumblers Safe
from The State Journal-Register    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
A group of six people surrounded one of four trampolines set up in the Prairie Capital Convention Center, closely watching a young man tuck and flip high in the air between bounces. When he stumbled on his landing, one of the six quickly put his arms up, catching the tumbler from going over the edge. Spotters are one way the United States Tumbling and Trampoline Association tries to protect tumblers from injury during its national competition. The event continues through Saturday at the convention center.  More
