New Tests for Helmets Proposed
The Associated Press via The Marietta Daily Journal
There is no concussion-proof football helmet, but manufacturers may soon have to meet new testing standards against certain concussion-causing forces — a step in the quest for more protection. The organization that sets safety standards for athletic equipment was preparing to adopt the testing criteria on Friday. It is part of a movement to try to make contact sports safer, as concern about concussions is growing.

He is 10 months into a painstaking rehabilitation from the gruesome play that left him with two broken bones, one skin graft and a pile of medical bills. And he is unwittingly at the forefront of a growing debate in college sports, whose athletes are calling for more rights and a bigger share of a nearly billion-dollar pie.

Soccer Players Need Lots of Food to Keep Engines Running
San Francisco Chronicle
This is something anyone who's watched World Cup soccer for the first time certainly understands by now: Any team that wants to make a run at the title is truly going to have to run. An elite soccer player (other than the goalkeeper) who plays an entire regulation length game will likely run around 9,000-10,000 meters. That's about six miles, and quite a bit more than the average for athletes in other major sports.

Researcher Shows Link Between Brain Injuries, Degenerative Diseases
The Daily Times
It's a story that's been in the news lately — NFL players coming forward about the permanent neurological damage they say was caused by playing this sport they love. Many of them suffered multiple concussions over several years. Some retired early. When you consider the fact that there are between 1.6 and 3.8 million sports related traumatic brain injuries each year in this country, the possible link between those injuries and diseases like Alzheimer's are downright frightening.

Missouri on Cutting Edge With DARI Equipment
Columbia Daily Tribune
Missouri uses motion lab to improve athletes' form and minimize injury risk. Five years ago, it took all morning for the team from Kansas City's Dynamic Athletics Research Institute to set up one of its mobile motion labs in the upstairs portion of the Missouri weight room. It took about an hour to fit the test subject, quarterback Blaine Gabbert, with the suit and markers needed to capture and read his movements, the kind of suit used in motion capture for a video game or movie.

Dodgers Survey Media Perceptions of Tommy John Surgery
LA Weekly
To baseball's best and brightest, the world's most precious resource isn't the gooey black stuff that oozes up from below. It's pitching, the good old-fashioned rear-back-and-fire of the cowhide, which can be found above ground and on several continents. While there may be no limit to the planet's ability to sustain the flow of pitching talent, ballplayers are dropping like flies in recent years, and the sport's powers-that-be aren't too keen on taking chances.
