2015 Proposal Deadline Approaching
NATA
NATA is accepting proposals for the 2015 convention in St. Louis! There are three categories you can submit for educational programming: Clinical Evidence-Based Practice, Foundations of Evidence-Based Practice and Non-Patient Oriented. Proposal topics must fall within the five domains of athletic training: Injury/Illness Prevention and Wellness Protection; Clinical Evaluation and Diagnosis; Immediate and Emergency Care; Treatment and Rehabilitation; and Organization and Professional Health and Well-Being. The deadline to submit your proposal is July 16.

For Heat Stroke Victims, Cool First, Then Transport

As the hottest months of the year approach, experts are urging coaches and paramedics to change how they treat athletes suffering from heat stroke. New guidelines released Friday by the National Athletic Trainer's Association say heat stroke victims need immediate cooling before they are taken to a hospital. "We're trying to get people to realize that's how you save people's lives from heat stroke," said Douglas Casa, director of athletic training education at the University of Connecticut.

Fourteen years ago, James Andrews, the Babe Ruth of orthopedic surgeons, might perform eight or nine Tommy John surgeries a year on the tender elbows of high school pitchers. Now he's up to eight or nine a week. "I did three high school kids this morning," he said one day last week. He's so concerned about what he calls an "epidemic," in fact, that he released a position statement in May in conjunction with Glenn Fleisig of the American Sports Medicine Institute.

Girls in Sports Need to Worry About Their Knees

A new study in Pediatrics, the journal for the American Academy of Pediatrics, found that anterior cruciate ligament injuries are on the rise, and girls are more likely to get this injury than their male friends. In the U.S. study, girls playing the same sport as boys are 2.5 to 6.2 times more likely to have an ACL injury than boys. In a Norwegian study, girls ages 10-19 had a 76 in 100,000 chance of tearing their ACL; boys in that same age range had a 47 in 100,000 chance of the same injury.

Moms of Youth Football Players Get Cram Course
Poughkeepsie Journal
Four dozen women snap selfies in the Giants' locker room. They examine the pros' helmets and shoulder pads, then head to the field house to do drills. The women all are football moms, and they're learning about tackling techniques, hydration, training and equipment care, all designed to keep their sons playing the game safely. The clinics are part of an initiative by the NFL and USA Football, which governs the sport, to demonstrate the benefits of the Heads Up Football program.
