"Electrocardiography in PPEs" is planned July 28, followed by "Key Components in the Acute Management of Cervical Spine-Injured Athletes" on Aug. 4. Then, on Aug. 18, NATA offers its first free webinar addressing heat illnesses. Registration allows for only 50 participants per webinar, so sign up soon.  More

Athletic Trainers Have Record Turnout at Convention Center

The annual meeting of the National Athletic Trainers' Association was in Philadelphia last week. The event drew a record turnout - 7,200 athletic trainers from all over, including schools, colleges and universities, hospitals, the armed forces, pro sports teams, cultural organizations (ballet corps, the Rockettes, to name a few), private industry, and orthopedic practices.  More

Just ahead of the Blue Angels' appearance at the Cape Girardeau Regional Air Festival, a few Missouri residents flew in an F/A-18 Hornet Wednesday in recognition of their work with young people. Rob Bunger, a certified athletic trainer at Saint Francis Medical Center, and Neil Berry, the head principal at Fort Zumwalt West high school in O'Fallon, Mo., were given ride-alongs. More

Failed ACL Repairs: More Common Than You May Think

An estimated 400,000 people suffer an ACL injury each year, requiring primary reconstruction surgery to repair the injury. Unfortunately, 18,000 to 35,000 of those repairs will fail and require revisions, which are additional surgeries for reconstruction. Revisions are more complicated, less successful and require a longer rehabilitation period than the first surgery.  More

Lawsuit Prompts NCAA to Screen Athletes For Sickle Cell

Dale and Bridgette Lloyd say they didn't sue the NCAA for money. Their son Dale Lloyd II was a freshman cornerback at Rice in September 2006 when he fell unconscious on the practice field after sprinting 100 yards for the 16th consecutive time. Their son died the next day from complications associated with sickle cell trait, a genetic trait that can be detected by a blood test costing $10.  More
