Phys Ed: Do Certain Types of Sneakers Prevent Injuries?
from The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Over the course of three large studies, the most recent of which was published last month in The American Journal of Sports Medicine, researchers found almost no correlation at all between wearing the proper running shoes and avoiding injury. Injury rates were high among all the runners, but they were highest among the soldiers who had received shoes designed specifically for their foot types. If anything, wearing the “right” shoes for their particular foot shape had increased trainees’ chances of being hurt.  More

High School Drug Testing Shows No Long-Term Effect on Use
from USA TODAY    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
New research paints a decidedly mixed picture when it comes to mandatory drug testing for high school students trying out for sports or other extracurricular activities: While testing seems to reduce self-reported drug use in the short term, it has virtually no effect on teens' plans to use drugs in the future. A U.S. Department of Education study, out today, surveyed students at 36 high schools that got federal grants to do drug testing. Half of the schools had already begun testing for marijuana, amphetamines and other drugs; the other half had not.  More

New Test for Brain Injury on Horizon
from The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
One of the most frustrating aspects of brain injuries is that they can be difficult to diagnose; emergency rooms can sometimes miss subtle symptoms, leading to improper treatment and potentially catastrophic consequences. Now, researchers are close to identifying so-called biomarkers that may soon make it possible to pinpoint brain injuries with a simple blood test. Presence of these biomarkers—proteins produced by an injured brain—could end up determining the future treatment of the estimated 1.4 million athletes, car-crash victims and others in the U.S. who are treated for brain injuries in emergency rooms each year, in addition to hundreds of thousands of soldiers injured in blasts.  More

More Research Needed to Verify Effectiveness of Knee Injury Prevention Programs, Study Says
from Science Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
The jury is still out on the effectiveness of prevention programs for knee injuries in young athletes, according to a study presented at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine Annual Meeting. Better designed research studies are needed before it can be determined that ACL and knee injuries can be prevented with specialized training programs, the study noted.  More

With This Rinse, Performance Improves in Research Study
from The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Exercise scientists say they have stumbled on an amazing discovery. Athletes can improve their performance in intense bouts of exercise, lasting an hour or so, if they merely rinse their mouths with a carbohydrate solution. They don't even have to swallow it. It has to be real carbohydrates, though; the scientists used a solution of water and a flavorless starch derivative called maltodextrin. Artificial sweeteners have no effect.  More

Deceptive Marketing of Dietary Supplements
from Forbes    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Without any fanfare, Congress held a hearing recently on how supplements are marketed to the elderly. The Government Accountability Office (GAO) conducted a study of 40 different herbal supplements, looking at what the supplements actually contained as well as how they were being sold, both in stores and online. Not surprisingly, the GAO found that companies have been making deceptive, inaccurate claims about many of the most popular supplements sold in the U.S.  More
