New Video Features Presidential Platforms

Optimizing Performance Webinar in September

Isaiah Kacyvenski will be presenting "Optimizing the Performance Envelope," at 11 a.m. CT on Sept. 24. This session will provide an overview of such technologies from an athlete's point of view, with an emphasis on quantitative measurement of key indicators of athletic performance such as force of impact to the head and athlete core hydration. It will explore how athletic trainers can integrate such performance monitoring technologies into their existing protocols to achieve an ideal balance between performance and safety.

One Month Left in NPI Contest
NATA
NATA kicked off the "Are You Being Counted?" Contest at our 2014 convention in Indianapolis, and it will run through Aug. 31. The goal is to see which district will boast the highest number of athletic training NPIs or the largest increase in athletic training NPIs during the contest period. All members, including students, are encouraged to participate by simply applying for your NPI number online. If you have an NPI, you are already entered for a chance to win. Five winners from each of the winning districts will be selected at random to win convention registration or NATA membership dues for 2015! The application process is painless and only takes a few moments. Visit www.nata.org/NPI for all the contest details, frequently asked questions, more facts about NPI and instructions on how to apply.

Schools Increasing Use of Athletic Trainers to Curb Concussions

As more parents and school officials become aware of concussion safety, more athletic trainers can be seen on the sidelines at sporting events. In some cases, schools rent those professional trainers, said Kate Frank, a certified athletic trainer at Action Physical Therapy in Hubbard, Ohio. She works at her local school district's home-sports events and travels with the football team.

Teen Athlete Doping on the Rise

A new, national survey shows teen experimentation with human growth hormones has more than doubled in the past year. A Columbia, Missouri, high school athletic trainer said parents of teenagers need to watch for signs of the use of performance enhancing drugs. In a confidential 2013 survey of more than 3,700 high school students released by the Partnership for Drug-Free Kids, 11 percent reported using synthetic human growth hormone at least once.

Every morning, just after she wakes up, Trish Burnett drinks a big glass of water to start the day. The 54-year-old from Davenport, Iowa, tries to run 3 to 5 miles each day as well and feels that consuming the water helps get her body more "awake and moving," she said. Burnett, who plans to run the Quad-City Times Bix 7 road race, said that a hydration routine is just part of her lifestyle.

Medical Officials Play Big Part in Rodeo

Participants in the rodeo are the life of the festival, but not many get to see who runs the show behind the scenes. Physical therapists and athletic trainers work around the clock to make sure cowboys and cowgirls stay as healthy as possible during competition. Athletic trainer Tom Fagan says before the rodeo, therapists and trainers prepare contestants and after the majority of time is spent treating injuries and strains.
