Study: Gender, Dominant Leg Influence ACL Injuries
from the Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are often linked to how an athlete moves. Kicking, pivoting and landing can be important factors in tearing or rupturing this knee ligament that helps keep the joint stable. But gender and which leg sustains the injury may be key as well, according to a new study. Researchers from Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and the Santa Monica Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Research Foundation looked at ACL injuries in dominant versus supporting legs among 93 athletes, 41 male and 52 female. The participants were a mix of professional, college, high school and youth soccer players who had undergone surgery for a complete ALC tear.  More

Hitless or Witless?
from The Wall Street Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Protecting football players from serious head injuries is making news again. Accused for years by outside critics and even Congress of dismissing the danger of concussions, the National Football League has finally installed measures to safeguard players during games and, when they are injured, to treat them more effectively. The latest effort, a locker-room poster being sent to all NFL teams this month, alerts players to signs of concussion—such as nausea, dizziness and double vision—and urges anyone exhibiting these symptoms to be examined by a doctor. The initiative is supported by both the NFL and the players union. More

Accidents, Not Body Checking, Cause Most Youth Hockey Injuries
from ORTHOSuperSite    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
Contrary to the common belief that checking among young hockey players causes the most injuries, an online study in the British Journal of Sports Medicine found 66 percent of their overall injuries were due to accidents, including players hitting the boards or goal posts, colliding with other players, or being hit by a puck. The study, conducted by researchers at the University of Buffalo, which examined injury rates for 3,000 boys ages four to 18 years for a 5-year period — for a total of 13,292 players years, is the largest and most comprehensive analysis to date of young hockey players, according to a University of Buffalo press release.  More

Sports Drinks Geared More Toward Intense Activity
from the Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Sports drinks are mostly water, important for any active individual, whether a competitive athlete or fitness hobbyist. But a person's need for the added ingredients in the drinks (typically sodium, potassium and sugar, and, in so-called recovery drinks, protein) varies depending on how hot it is outside and how long and how intense a workout is. Sports drinks typically provide about 15 to 18 grams of sugar in every 8-ounce serving. But for the average workout, people who are eating three square meals a day don't need the extra calories those carbs provide.  More
