Kids, Head Injuries and the NFL
from The Huffington Post    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
NATA has contacted this news source to thank them for the important coverage and remind them of appropriate terminology to describe athletic training student aids.

The National Institutes of Health has declared that we are in the midst of a "national epidemic" of concussions and other head injuries, especially among the young. With football, where so many concussions — many of them undiagnosed and untreated — occur, the professional National Football League has a heavy responsibility. Coaches and young players look to the league and its players as role models. The "trickle down" effect of what the NFL does and does not do is tremendous, everything from the style of play to the way injuries are and are not treated.

Fractures a Costly Cause of High School Sports Injury
from Bloomberg Businessweek    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Fractures are the fourth most common type of injury suffered by high school athletes in the United States and can be serious and costly, a new study has found. Ligament sprains, muscle sprains and bruising occur more often, but an analysis of 2005-2009 national data found that 95 percent of fractures required expensive diagnostic imaging (such as X-rays, MRIs and CT scans) and 16 percent led to surgery.  More

"This is the equipment you're going to see when you come to us," he said to a small group of EMTs on Thursday morning at the Evans Athletic Complex. At least every other year, the Newark fire department's EMTs go through a training session with the high school's athletic trainers, learning about new treatment methods and changes to equipment.  More

Number of 300-Pound NFL Lineman Still Ballooning
from The Associated Press via Google News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Ten or 20 years ago, Nate Newton and William "The Refrigerator" Perry were on a short list of larger-than-life rarities in the NFL. The 300-plus-pound behemoths made headlines simply for existing. Their every move shook the field and made people take notice. These days, though, players their size hardly make a dent. Such is life in the ever-expanding world of the NFL.  More

Land on Your Toes, Save Your Knees
from Science Daily    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Anterior cruciate ligament injuries are a common and debilitating problem, especially for female athletes. A new study from U.C. Davis shows that changes in training can reduce shear forces on knee joints and could help cut the risk of developing ACL tears. The research was published online Aug. 3 in the Journal of Biomechanics. "We focused on an easy intervention, and we were amazed that we could reduce shear load in 100 percent of the volunteers," said David Hawkins, professor of neurobiology, physiology and behavior at U.C. Davis. Hawkins conducted the study at the U.C. Davis Human Performance Laboratory with graduate student Casey Myers.  More

Cheerleading Not a Sport Yet, Federal Judge Rules
from The Providence Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail
article
Competitive cheerleading is not an official sport that colleges can use to meet gender-equity requirements, a federal judge ruled in ordering a Connecticut school to keep its women's volleyball team. Several volleyball players and their coach had sued Quinnipiac University of Hamden, Conn., after it announced in March 2009 that it would eliminate the team for budgetary reasons and replace it with a competitive cheer squad.  More

Injuries a Common Side Effect of Athlete's Anxiety
from Marin Independent Journal    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Athletic injuries and performance anxiety can go hand in hand. For some, the pressure to perform becomes so intense that they only gain relief through injury. Others compensate by pushing themselves too hard, sometimes leading to debilitating injuries that can even end their athletic careers. According to Dave Goltz, a Larkspur, Calif., based orthopedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine, while sports injuries are often just the product of bad luck, anxiety definitely plays a role in some injuries.  More

One-Sport Athletes More Prone to Injuries, Study Says
from The Andalusia Star-News    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Athletes specializing in one sport instead of multiple sports are more likely to acquire injuries, experts say. Thirty million children participate in organized sports, according to Safe Kids USA. Safe Kids USA is a network of organizations that helps to prevent unintentional childhood injury, the leading cause of death and disability for children ages 1 to 14. Participation in high school athletics is increasing, with more than 7.3 million high school students participating annually, according to the National Federation of State High School Associations. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control reports that high school athletes account for an estimated 2 million injuries, 500,000 doctor visits and 30,000 hospitalizations each year.  More
