District and State Funding Available For Safe Sports School Award

The Safe Sports School award is an NATA initiative to promote youth athlete safety, injury prevention, as well as athlete and parent education among secondary schools. District and state associations are showing their support by offering assistance to minimize the cost of applying for the award.

New Targeted NATA LinkedIn Groups Available

Most Women's Gymnastics Injuries Don't Sideline College Athletes

Fewer than half of injuries in women's collegiate gymnastics are serious enough to sideline athletes for more than one day, a U.S. study suggests. Researchers analyzed injury data from 11 college varsity programs for five years starting with the 2009–10 school year. Of 418 injuries, only 164 were serious enough to require the women to stop participating in gymnastics for more than a day.

Concussions Can Occur in All Youth Sports
The New York Times
Recent attention to long-term brain damage linked to multiple concussions among professional football players has prompted a much closer look at how children and adolescents who participate in sports can be protected from similar consequences. And with good reason. The young brain is especially susceptible to concussion, and sports-related concussions account for more than half of all emergency room visits by children aged 8 through 13, according to the NATA.

Rams Donate $15,000 to Ensure Athletic Trainers at High School Games

When informed that football games in the St. Louis Public School league did not have certified athletic trainers at their games, Reggie Scott, the St. Louis Rams' director of sports medicine and performance, knew what had to be done. "When we learned that SLPS didn't have certified athletic trainer coverage at their high school games, we were committed to find a solution to that issue," Scott said.

Each year, between 1.7 and 3 million people end up with a sports- and recreation-related concussion in the U.S. That's according to statistics gathered by the UPMC Sports Medicine Concussion Program, which see more than 17,000 patients a year. This fall, concussion experts from around the country will come to Pittsburgh to discuss the treatment of the mild traumatic brain injury.
