from USA Today    Share    Share on
FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Boxing isn't appropriate for children and teens, and parents should encourage their kids to find sports that don't focus on delivering blows to the head and face. Longer CPR No Better Than Shorter for
Cardiac Arrest Patients, Researchers Say

from the Los Angeles Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
During cardiac arrest time is of the essence, but a longer period of cardiopulmonary resuscitation may be no better than a shorter one, a study finds. The study, released in the New England Journal of Medicine, compared outcomes of 9,933 cardiac arrest patients, about half of whom had 30 to 60 seconds of initial CPR from paramedics, or three minutes of the procedure, before heart rhythms were analyzed. In both groups, 5.9 percent of patients survived and were discharged from the hospital in acceptable health. More

from USA Today    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Aerobic exercise is better than resistance training if you want to lose the belly fat that poses a serious threat to your health, researchers say. That's the finding of their eight-month study that compared the effectiveness of aerobic exercise (such as jogging), resistance training (such as weight lifting), or a combination of the two activities in 196 overweight, sedentary adults aged 18 to 70. Prescribing Exercise to Treat Depression
from The New York Times    Share    Share on FacebookTwitterShare on LinkedinE-mail article
Recent research indicates that there's no reason for people with unyielding depression not to talk with their doctors about exercise as a treatment option. "Side effects are almost nonexistent," said Dr. Madhukar H. Trivedi, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas. "You get additional benefits in terms of improvements in cardiovascular health and reductions in other disease risks," things antidepressant drugs do not provide. Plus, he pointed out, "the cost profile is very favorable." Exercise, as medicines go, is cheap. More
