More Young Athletes Suffering Concussions

As the fall sports season begins, a new study is showing a significant increase in concussions. The report comes out at the same time the American Academy of Pediatrics is issuing new guidelines on what to do about sports-related concussions. The study found that emergency room visits have tripled for teens receiving head injuries while playing organized sports.  More

Should you stretch before a run? That question, which has prompted countless academic studies, debates and inter-running-partner squabbles, is now at the heart of a notable new study published in August on the website of USA Track and Field, the sport's national governing body. The study, one of the largest of its kind, involved almost 1,400 runners, from age 13 to past 60, who were assigned randomly to two groups.  More

Study Finds Ultra-Endurance Running May Not Be Good for Heart

In 2009, a study was conducted in UK by Liverpool John Moores University and the Countess of Chester Hospital to assess the effects of running in ultra-endurance races. Typically aimed at super-fit and experienced athletes, these races are held over distances exceeding 50 miles. The conclusions, presented at the European Society of Cardiology's Congress 2010 in Stockholm, suggest that some damage is likely to occur to the heart muscle of competitors, while 12 percent of the study group showed signs of significant cardiac damage.  More
