Nominate a deserving athletic trainer for one of eight awards in the following categories: Head Athletic Trainer — NCAA Division I; Head Athletic Trainer — NCAA Division II; Head Athletic Trainer — NCAA Division III; Head Athletic Trainer — NAIA; Head Athletic Trainer — Junior College/Community College; Assistant Athletic Trainer of Year; Above and Beyond Award and New Horizon Award. The deadline for nominations is Jan. 31, 2015.

Game day is a big event for an athletic trainer. Your duties on that day increase, and you ask yourself: "How am I going make this happen?" You start by thinking about game day and preparation several days before the event; going over in your mind everything that has to be done that day — even though you have a list of what you need to take. Concussion? Some Colleges Still Think Coach Should Decide

Even though a lawsuit brought against the NCAA ended in a $70 million settlement due to increasing concern over lax injury guidelines, most colleges these days say their concussion management plans are effective in protecting students from dangerous head trauma. A study in the American Journal of Sports Medicine reports nearly 99 percent of the 907 colleges and universities who took part in the study claim their concussion management plans are top notch.

Wisconsin Researchers Look at Fruit Flies to Study Traumatic Brain Injury
The Badger Herald
Collaborations are underway at the University of Wisconsin to probe questions about the long-term consequences of, and potential therapies for, traumatic brain injury in humans. The answers, according to David Wassarman, a professor of cellular and molecular biology, may lie in fruit flies. According to the study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Science by Wassarman and colleagues, traumatic brain injury is defined as mechanical damage to the brain.

Calf Muscles Outclass Hamstrings in Injury Prevention

Better prevention of non-contact ACL injuries is on the horizon after a recent study found the calf muscle plays a larger role in stabilizing the knee than previously thought. Researchers from the University of Western Australia's School of Sport Science, Exercise and Health and the University of Tennessee studied six amateur Western Australian Rules footballers to determine what muscle forces are at work during single-leg jump landings.

Student Athletes at Risk for Lifelong Injuries

Doctors are now saying that young baseball pitchers are at risk for developing painful and irreversible shoulder injuries. However, players said this isn't anything they haven't heard before. "I've heard often times, it's not 'if' but 'when' are you going to have a shoulder injury," said Corpus Christi Islanders pitcher Jacob Dorris. "It's something that is prominent in baseball."
