NATA Office Hosts Member Reception

The NATA office will be opening its doors to members on Dec. 3. Members are invited to stop by from 6-7:30pm. They will have the opportunity to meet staff and other members as well as getting a tour of the national office. Drinks and refreshments will also be served. Members who would like to attend do not need to RSVP and can contact Holly McCauley (hollym@nata.org) with any questions. More

Submit Student Video Contest Entries in December

The National Athletic Training Students' Committee will accept submissions for the second edition of its video contest from Dec. 1-30. The goal of the contest is to promote the field of athletic training by capturing the heart of the profession on film. Select entries will be screened at the 2012 Annual Meeting in St. Louis. Stop by the committee webpage to take a look at the rules and regulations which were recently revised. More

The Marine Corps, while still reveling in its reputation for having the toughest recruit training of any military service, has realized that boot camp injuries cost time and money and can be demoralizing to injured recruits and their buddies. To reduce the number of injuries, the Marines have hired 27 certified athletic trainers — most with experience tending professional and college athletes — to oversee training for enlisted recruits and officer candidates at sites throughout the United States. Study Reveals Leather Helmets May Help Reduce Concussions

Century-old leather helmets are as good as and sometimes better than modern helmets at protecting against concussion from routine football hits, according to a study published by the Journal of Neurosurgery. Cleveland Clinic researchers conducted impact tests in their biomechanics lab comparing two leather helmets from the early 1900s with 11 of today's polycarbonate helmets. They simulated on-field collisions of 75 g-forces or less, which they say covers 95 percent of the hits common in college and high school games. More


New Laws on Concussions Protect Student Athletes

Thirty-two states now have laws addressing student-athlete concussions and several others could eventually follow suit, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures. Most legislation requires an athlete to leave competition or practice when a concussion is suspected, returning to play only when a doctor or other medical expert consents. Most also require school athletic officials to educate coaches, athletes and parents about concussions. More

A Focused Warm-Up Program May Stave Off Female Athletes' Injuries

Lower extremity injuries can derail a young athlete, but a study finds that a 20-minute neuromuscular warm-up might go a long way in preventing that damage. The study, released in the Archives of Pediatrics & Adolescent Medicine, looked at the effect of a comprehensive warm-up on lower-body injuries among high school female soccer and basketball athletes compared with a regular warm-up routine.
