The scholarship program is one of the Foundation's largest, awarding more than $138,000 annually to deserving athletic training students. All personal information must be submitted by Jan. 21, 2013. High School Football More Dangerous Than College, Pros

The injury rates for high school football are higher than those in college and NFL football, according to the chairman of the medical advisory board of Arizona's High School Athletic Organization. Meanwhile, fewer than 40 percent of high schools have athletic trainers on staff. "So you have 60 percent that are uncovered, that are uncared for, that don't have the valuable expertise available to them," said Dr. Javier Cardenas. More

NFL to Use EHRs for Care Coordination, Injury Tracking

The NFL is kicking off a league-wide effort to digitize health records. The NFL will use eClinicalWorks' electronic health record platform to streamline coordination of care for players. Announced Nov. 19, the multimillion dollar deal will allow NFL doctors and trainers to access health records and radiology images and share them with second-opinion physicians, said Girish Kumar Navani, CEO and co-founder of eClinicalWorks. Stanford Analyzes Athletes' Concussions

The brains and the brawn at Stanford are teaming up to figure out how concussions are caused. Stanford researchers have turned the school's football practices into a living laboratory in an effort to understand the mechanics of what happens to the head and neck when a head injury occurs. The hope is that once researchers determine what forces cause a concussion, they can start improving sports equipment and rules to reduce injuries. More

In Phoenix, a Kingman High School football player is thankful to be alive this Thanksgiving. On Oct. 26, 17-year-old Derek Curran was playing in a game when he was hit. He said that Kingman's athletic trainer thought she noticed something wasn't quite right. "She was talking to me and I said, 'No, no, I'm fine,'" Curran said. "I put my mouthpiece in and went to go back out onto the field and started having seizures right there." More
