New ACL Prevention Brochure Available

From Sept. 23: The Osteoarthritis Action Alliance, with the aid and leadership of NATA, has created a flyer to educate professional sport organizations in the importance of preventing ACL injury. The flyer includes exercises that can be incorporated into a preventive training program to prevent ACL injury and improve the performance of athletes. The flyer is available in different sizes for your printing and viewing needs.

New Consensus Statement on Sports Medicine Management

From July 22: NATA recently released the inter-association task force recommendations titled "Best Practices for Sports Medicine Management for Secondary Schools and Colleges." The statement is believed to be the first of its kind that focuses on specific protocols to ensure effective and efficient sports medicine procedures in these school settings.

New Consensus Statement Addresses Mental Health of College Athletes

From Sept. 30: Last week, leading health care professionals released inter-association task force recommendations on "Developing a Plan to Recognize and Refer Student Athletes with Psychological Concerns at the College Level." The new document was released at a press event and published in the September-October 2013 issue of the Journal of Athletic Training, NATA's scientific publication. The program was convened by NATA and took place at the National Collegiate Athletic Association in Indianapolis. This is believed to be the first time a cross section of interdisciplinary professions has collaborated on this type of document.

Joint Statement Addresses Process for Examining Professional Degree

From Oct. 28: A Joint Statement from the BOC, CAATE, NATA and NATA Foundation Presidents regarding the process for examining the professional degree was released last week. Currently, the profession is engaged in a discussion about the professional degree being offered at the baccalaureate and post−baccalaureate level. There has been much conversation regarding this topic, so it is the intent of the Presidents of the Strategic Alliance members (BOC, CAATE, NATA, NATA Foundation) to communicate the current process to all stakeholders during this time of examination and public comment via this joint statement.

NATA and the NATA Research & Education Foundation participated in and provided partial funding of the study, conducted by the Institute of Medicine and National Research Council. NATA member Tracey Covassin, PhD, ATC, served on the committee and was one of the featured presenters at the event. Tamara Valovich McLeod, PhD, ATC, served on the review committee.

New Official Statement on Crown of Helmet Violations

Ankle Tape Can Be Sticky Situation in College Football

From Nov. 4: As the University of California's football team suffered through a dismal 3-9 season last year, athletics director Sandy Barbour had another concern — ankle tape. Two days after a victory at Washington State moved the Golden Bears to 3-4, Barbour e-mailed equipment manager Dave Moosman and head athletic trainer Ryan Cobb about several players having their ankles spatted during the game.
