Marion County coaches talk about playing, coaching in Kingdom of the Sun basketball tourney
Ocala Star-Banner
The Kingdom of the Sun allows local basketball teams to play the best in the state and national talent yearly. In its 48th rendition, we had one of the most talented fields in recent history. With almost half a century of play, we turn to the one group that changes far less than the talent; the coaches. They’ve seen it all, and a few even played in the event during their high school days, giving us a deep history to pull from.

Rookie coach learns lessons, brings fresh approach to team
TribLive.com
Often, as he coaches his first season at Greensburg Salem, Cam Auld finds himself reverting back to the not-too-distant past when he was a high school basketball player.
He puts himself on the outside of the huddle looking inward.
“You put yourself back in that time,” the Golden Lions’ 24-year-old rookie boys basketball coach said. “These guys are so young. You think, ‘What is going through their minds?’ I remember how my mind worked back then.”

As Pat Behan coaches with ALS, basketball provides 'the best medicine'
The Washington Post
Pat Behan sat slumped behind the desk in his office late Tuesday, visibly exhausted from one of the best nights of his basketball life. He had just earned his 102nd win as coach at St. John’s, an 80-73 overtime thriller against nationally celebrated IMG Academy. Before him sat a dinner that had yet to be touched, and around him stood a small crowd of gleeful assistants and friends.
“Yeah, I’m tired,” Behan said, leaning back in his chair. “But I’m happy.”
The coach had known this would be a long night, so he had tried to sleep in Tuesday morning. He has learned to take all the sleep he can get when he doesn’t have a doctor’s appointment or a team workout scheduled early. Behan figured he would need every bit of his depleted energy to handle the emotional and physical toll of a night meant to be mostly about him.

Coaches vs. Cancer event nears
Shelbyville Times-Gazette
Sixteen years ago, the Cascade Cafeteria Scholarship Fund started when Judy Pope finished her fight with liver cancer and passed away.
In the years since, that tragic event has grown into a local movement of helping in the fight against Cancer. Judy was the mother of then Cascade High School Basketball Coach Charlie Pope and mother-in-law to Cindy Pope.
Each year Charlie and Cindy, with the support of the community and Cascade High School, would host a Coaches vs Cancer event at one of the home basketball games at Cascade High School. The event includes a spaghetti dinner and a “cancer dedicated” basketball game.

Parents are talking, again, about the risks of football after Damar Hamlin's cardiac arrest
Today
Parents are once again weighing the risks and rewards of letting their children play football, after Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin suffered a cardiac arrest during a Jan. 2 game. His frightening collapse is reminding parents of the danger in every sport, especially football. For the most part it's concussions, not cardiac arrest, that make parents and doctors worry. Brain injury continues to be the main concern, but Hamlin's health battle is shining a broader spotlight on the difficult decisions parents face about letting their kids play football.

What's in your protein bar?
Triathlete
When you think about protein bars, what comes to mind? Convenience? Recovery food? Quick energy? While whole foods are preferred to get in overall balanced nutrition, protein bars can provide quick sources of all of the macronutrients (carbs, protein, and fats) as well as an additional burst of micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) when you are in a pinch. However, it is important to pay close attention to what exactly is in your protein bar when making your choice.

Gut microbes can boost the motivation to exercise, study finds
