Stressed out in lockdown, America's young adults are overeating
HealthDay News
When the coronavirus pandemic started, many people began baking banana bread and sourdough loaves at home. Stress eating is nothing new, and 2020 was a year filled with angst for a lot of people.
But researchers at the University of Southern California (USC), Los Angeles, wondered, "Are college-aged people overeating, too?" According to their new study, the answer is "yes."

Lawsuit to challenge Minnesota sports mask mandate
KARE-TV
A lawsuit is expected to be filed challenging a mandate by Gov. Tim Walz ordering high school and youth athletes to wear masks during competition.
The group Let Them Play, an organization made up of parents, coaches, referees and athletes, says it has withdrawn a previous lawsuit filed against the governor and other state agencies contesting the "pause" in the winter youth sports season. That legal action will be retooled and refiled, expanding challenges to administration policies like the mask mandate, which Let Them Play organizers calls "absurd."

Opponents refuse to play on Branson's hardscrabble football field. Now the town needs a(nother) miracle.
The Colorado Sun
The athletic field at the far northeast corner of Branson’s town limits had sat mostly idle since the 1980s, when it was last used for baseball and still held memories as home to a 1967 high school championship team.
In 2016, when Branson High School finally cobbled together its first varsity football team — the scaled-down, six-man variety — this same parcel amid the ranchland near Colorado’s southern border became its gridiron, named Caldwell Field for the former superintendent who launched the team.

Physician assesses COVID risks in youth sports
Athletic Business
It's been a year since the first case of novel coronavirus was detected in the United States, and while much has been learned about the too-often fatal respiratory disease COVID-19, "we still don't know what we don't know." That's according to Dr. Susannah Briskin, a pediatric sports medicine specialist at University Hospital in Cleveland, who coauthored return-to-sports guidelines for the American Academy of Pediatrics, and has been updating them every 30 days with new information from evolving medical literature and news reports.

For young adults, the pandemic's effects on mental health can be life-threatening
Alabama Political Reporter
Younger adults, college students and recent college graduates, while not in the age group at highest risk of death or serious illness from the health effects of COVID-19, are struggling to stay positive about their prospects and are at high risk for suicidal thoughts, according to Angela Stowe, director of student counseling services at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Exercising in the cold could burn off more fat, new research shows
Science Alert
Inclement weather can be a good excuse to put off the daily jog, but new research suggests that exercising in lower temperatures could burn off more fat than normal — at least when it comes to shorter bursts of high-intensity exercise.
In a study of 11 "moderately fit, overweight" adult volunteers, lipid oxidation — the technical term for burning fat — increased by more than three times during exercise in a colder environment of 32 degrees Fahrenheit, compared with a "thermoneutral" environment of around 70 degrees Fahrenheit.

For an exercise 'snack,' try the new standing 7-minute workout
The New York Times
Make 2021 the year of the exercise snack.
Just as you might grab a handful of chips or nuts to break the monotony of your day, an exercise “snack” is a short burst of movement you can enjoy at home or in the office or outdoors. It can last for mere seconds or for several minutes. You can do it while talking on the phone or just because you want to take an hourly break from sitting in your chair. You don’t even have to change your clothes.

Which exercise regimen works best to ease lower back pain?
HealthDay
Chronic lower back pain can make the most routine tasks difficult. But a new study suggests patients can learn new, practical and less painful ways to move through individualized "motor skills training," or MST.
A two-year study of nearly 150 patients found that MST appears to better relieve disability from lower back pain than a more common but less-tailored exercise regimen broadly focused on improving strength and flexibility.
