Curriculum Design For Developing A Successful Wrestling Program
By Scot Davis, Owatonna, Minnesota
A number of years ago as a graduate student, pursuing a Master's Degree in Athletic Administration, I was asked to write a curriculum design for physical education. However, I asked our professor if I could instead do mine in regards to designing a wrestling program. Our professor was open to this saying curriculum design can be adapted to anything, and should be to make the best design and procedures for success.
So with this in mind I set out to develop a curriculum for developing a successful wrestling program. I then used this curriculum to develop our program at Owatonna High School. The following is the curriculum I designed with all the proper tools and procedures I learned in that course.
The reason I'm sharing this information now is I've had a number of years to try this curriculum out in our program. Believe me it has worked, with some minor adjustments along the way. Obviously as the years go by some things change according to the times. However, the basic concepts are still in place and followed today. It has stayed pretty constant over the years.
I can tell you firsthand that the goals I set out to accomplish have been achieved. Those goals are not all about wins. They are about the total success of our program from developing better cooperation, more help, increased numbers in participation, enthusiasm and recognition within our community and beyond. I hope by sharing this curriculum design with other coaches that I can help in your developing a program course for success.

Altered reality: Portal transfers growing, impact prep college options
Examiner Enterprise
Bartlesville High School head football coach Harry Wright is not a fan of the college transfer portal, which some have described as college free agency.
Wright is part of a growing number of high school coaches concerned about how the college portal is limiting the number of athletic scholarships for outgoing prep athletes.
And, the negative effects are likely going to grow.

How athletes can develop a mind-body connection
STACK
Things are happening beyond your consciousness that you cannot see, hear, or even feel. Often, situations and experiences unconsciously condition and program you through life, leading to poor health, diminished performance, or low energy levels. Your emotions, thoughts, and feelings affect your body in a good or bad way. In other words, your mind is very influential to your physical health. Therefore, being mindful is the key to connecting the mind and body. Training the brain to make the unconscious conscious produces the mind-body connection.

Former Miami Heat teammates Ray Allen, Shane Battier face off as high school coaches
SBLive
Back in 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 NBA seasons, Ray Allen and Shane Battier were fellow teammates on the Miami Heat together.
Fast forward about a decade later and the two are facing off on the hardwood, but not as basketball players. The pair, who played together on the Heat’s 2012-2013 NBA championship team, faced off as coaches for Gulliver Prep (Ray Allen) and Ransom Everglades (Shane Battier). Gulliver Prep defeated Ransom Everglades 64-53 on Tuesday night.

Let's listen to student-athletes and respect high school contest officials
NFHS
With the 2022-23 high school basketball season in full swing, we have, unfortunately, continued to see reports of unacceptable behavior similar to events this fall – individuals yelling insults and obscenities at officials, and fans tracking down officials after games. A new year, but the same ongoing problems with fan behavior in high school sports.
As soon as one of our state associations signs up another person to officiate, obnoxious behavior by fans drives two or three others away.

Old-school football coach Max Miller leads new generation into Optimist All-Star Classic
The Sacramento Bee
Max Miller is like a cockroach in all of its splendid gritty glory, and this is meant in the kindest, most affectionate ways, of course. He won’t go away. You can’t shoo him or stomp him. Age doesn’t deter the timeless football coach who has roamed area sidelines since 1963. Weather doesn’t scare him off. Neither would anti-bug pesticides.

Splendora ISD leaders back softball coach's 'I achieved failure' jerseys after parents' complaints
The Courier
The superintendent of the Splendora Independent School District and its athletic director said they stand by a softball coach's design for a practice jersey with a phrase that has raised concerns in the community.
The jersey, which reads "I achieved failure," was meant to inspire rather than demean, Superintendent Jeff Burke said Wednesday, adding that the district realized it may have not explained the meaning behind the phrase to parents and students.

The importance of hydration (even in the winter)
STACK
Drinking an ice-cold glass of water on a hot summer day is easy, satisfying to quench your thirst, and even becomes something that we crave. It becomes increasingly more challenging to drink water when the temperatures outdoors are slowly getting colder and colder as each day progresses. A cold beverage may be the last thing on your mind, but rest assured it shouldn’t be. Staying hydrated during the winter months is a crucial component to maintaining a healthy lifestyle all year round.
