PIAA says it's not up to officials to enforce masks

PIAA executive director Dr. Robert Lombardi said it is not the purview of officials to worry about whether or not high school athletes are wearing masks properly during competitions. Lombardi said following the PIAA Board of Directors meeting officials are to judge only the action on the court or wrestling mat, and not whether competitors are wearing masks properly.

When there’s a high school boys basketball game played at Portsmouth between a perennial playoff visiting team and the host, you can hardly hear the sound of the buzzer over the roar of the crowd that fills the bleachers on both sides of the court.
Such was the case — at least as far as the opponent is concerned — on Monday night when East Greenwich took the floor against the hometown Patriots. During warmups in the layup lines, sneakers were squeaking, players were bantering and game personnel could be heard chatting from almost any seat in the house.

MHSAA director: 'We see hundreds' of athletes playing out of state and non-school competition during shutdown

The Michigan High School Athletic Association released a statement and reaffirmed its commitment to play winter sports when the current restrictions are lifted by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. Currently, all contact winter sports are not allowed to compete or begin practices with contact until after Feb. 21.
MHSAA executive director Mark Uyl noted the current shutdown has led to many athletes heading out of state to compete, which is counterintuitive to containing the coronavirus.

Parents, students petition to allow high school contact sports to resume in Michigan

Michigan's high school players, parents and coaches are asking the state health department to let them play after another delay to winter contact sports, which involves basketball, cheer, hockey and wrestling.
They have started a petition for the return of high school basketball, which has almost 25,000 signatures. The athletes feel they've gotten the short end of the stick, and say they're willing to take extra precautions.

Florida high school wrestling tournament cited in spread of COVID-19, 1 death

An estimated 1,700 in-person school days were lost as a result of COVID-19 isolation and quarantining and one person died after a two-day wrestling tournament that featured athletes from 10 high schools across three Florida counties, according to federal study released recently.
The study released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention did not disclose the names of the three counties, but the host county had a 7.7% COVID-19 positivity rate when it hosted the event.
