How one HS coach is fighting back against the effects of no sports
NBC Sports
Athletics play a major role in the lives of student-athletes across the country, and in no place is that truer than Washington, D.C. The District is home to a rich history of high school sports, touting national powerhouses in basketball, lacrosse, hockey and football.
“I can only imagine how hard this has been for the kids, because I know what it’s been like for me,” Gonzaga head basketball coach Stephen Turner said. “One of the things I kept pointing out during this time is the mental health aspect of things; I truly believe that is the next major pandemic."

CIF will allow athletes, coaches to participate in more than one sport at a time
The Orange County Register
A rule change announced Wednesday by the CIF will allow high school athletes and coaches in California to be involved with more than one sport or team at any time for the rest of this school year.
The CIF, the state’s governing body for high school sports, said the change was made after consulting with the California Department of Public Health. There is one major exception to the revised rule – football.

High school football still prohibited in Oregon; soccer, cross country given green light
KGW-TV
High school football hasn't been played in Oregon in over a year. The pandemic and Oregon's COVID-19 restrictions have kept seniors from playing their final season of football to date. Starting Feb. 8, the state will only allow conditioning-style practices to take place. Any physical contact between players, like hitting or tackling, is prohibited per Gov. Brown and the Oregon Health Authority. Football is deemed a high-risk activity in Oregon.

Anxiety's spiking: Here's how to help our students
By Howard Margolis
COVID-19 has caused untold numbers of America’s students (and family members, teachers, and school support staff) to suffer mild to severe anxiety. Some will be helped by the passage of time and new coping skills. Some won’t. For those who won’t, especially those who suffer from severe anxiety, who intensely fear the future, it’s a crisis. It’s also a crisis for their families, their teachers, and America writ large. We can lament that, "The pandemic’s horrible. Anxiety's a natural outcome." Or, we can face the problem. We can ask and answer this question: How can we help affected students help themselves?

7 reasons humility is a highly desired leadership trait
Fast Company
When we think of great leaders, humility may not always be the first word we'd use to describe them. Many bigger-than-life executives such as Steve Jobs or Bill Gates would likely be described first as visionary, bold, or charismatic. Yet, if we look more closely, there are also leaders (such as, say, Richard Branson) who are often described as humble and laid-back.

The athlete's guide to conquer quarantines
STACK
The effects of COVID and the pandemic were tough on athletes. They suffered shortened seasons, quarantines, and reduced social interaction. The decrease in practice, games, and extracurricular training all lead to detraining.
Detraining itself is inconsequential unless an athlete plans to resume activity. The shortened pre-seasons, inability to physically prepare, and reduced training leave athletes unprepared.

Happy childhood? That's no guarantee for good mental health later in life
University of South Australia via SciTech Daily
It’s well understood that a difficult childhood can increase the likelihood of mental illness, but according to new research from the University of South Australia, a happy and secure childhood does not always protect a child from developing a mental illness later in life. Conducted in partnership with the University of Canberra, the finding is part of a study published in Current Psychology, which examined how early childhood experiences relate to different developmental pathways, and how these might be associated with poor mental health.

Study finds childhood diet has lifelong impact
AAAS via EurekAlert!
Eating too much fat and sugar as a child can alter your microbiome for life, even if you later learn to eat healthier, a new study in mice suggests.
The study by UC Riverside researchers is one of the first to show a significant decrease in the total number and diversity of gut bacteria in mature mice fed an unhealthy diet as juveniles.

Study shows young COVID survivors can get reinfected
HealthDay News
Being infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 is not a foolproof shield against reinfection, a small preliminary study warns.
The finding stems from tracking nearly 3,250 young U.S. Marine recruits between May and October. Of those, 189 had previously tested positive for the SAR-CoV-2 virus. During the six-week study itself, 10% of those who had tested positive got reinfected.
