NHSCA launches monthly Coaches Corner column
By Scot Davis
It is indeed an honor for my friend, Jim Jackson, and myself, Scot Davis, to be asked
to write this "Coaches Corner" Column for the National High School Coaches Association.
(NHSCA). We look forward to writing about the most relevant and current information, drawing
from our combined 100-plus years of experience in sports, as coaches to participants.
With numerous encounters and experiences to draw from, we feel we can help our readers
in most cases, because, as they say, "been there...done that!"
This being our first article we thought we should give our readers some information on our
backgrounds in sports.

Some coaches scratching their heads over new high school schedules
The Portland Press Herald
Maine high school football coaches had mixed reactions to fall schedules released Friday, in light of a new approach to scheduling designed to create more competitive games and fewer blowouts.
In February, the Maine Principals’ Association’s Football Committee introduced a plan to base schedules on a ranking system in each 11-man football enrollment class, in order to have programs of similar strength play each other. The changes led to more interclass games in this fall’s schedule.

'I miss working with kids': More than 30 high school QBs attend Mike Price's regional showcase
The Spokesman-Review
Standing near the 50-yard line, Mike Price projects his voice through a semifunctional megaphone to describe what’s happening at either end of the field at University High, where roughly 100 high-school football players from across the region and state have gathered for a unique experience with the esteemed ex-Washington State coach.
Quarterbacks and wide receivers are connecting on deep passes at one end of the field. At the opposite end they work through red-zone drills, performing various routes and patterns. Five years after he left his final college coaching job — a brief interim gig at UTEP — the former Washington State quarterback and Hall of Fame coach was eager to scratch an itch, returning to the game in a new capacity. He and his son Eric have started the Price Elite Passing Academy, holding private throwing sessions and showcase camps such as the event in Spokane Valley for quarterbacks throughout the state.

Team sports: Good for kids' minds, too
HealthDay News
Kids who play team sports may win some mental health benefits, but the same may not hold true for those in solo sports, a large, new study suggests.
A number of previous studies have linked team sports to better mental well-being for children and teenagers, and the new research is no exception: Overall, it found, U.S. kids who played team sports seemed to have fewer mental health "difficulties" — like anxiety and depression symptoms — than their peers who did not play sports at all.
In contrast, the situation was flipped for kids who played sports more dependent on individual performance — such as tennis, gymnastics and wrestling. They tended to show more mental health symptoms than their peers.
