It's a volleyball state, and these coaches are a big reason why
NebPreps
Sharon Zavala didn’t envision herself coaching volleyball at the time of her arrival at Grand Island Central Catholic. The sport’s seeds were still sprouting in Nebraska, and Zavala was hired to start the school’s girls basketball program anyway. When the head volleyball coach at the time told Zavala that she should be the volleyball coach instead, Zavala gave it a shot. It was a starting point though. Forty-eight seasons and a whopping 1,148 career wins later, Zavala is one of the more decorated and accomplished coaches in the state.

When it comes to education, coaches can help fill the gaps and increase positive outcomes for student athletes
The Seattle Medium
When it comes to coaching high school athletics, most coaches at inner-city schools will tell you that their roles go far beyond just X’s and O’s. Pending the environment, coaches must make themselves available to our society’s most impressionable demographics, our children and in some cases, even on the professional level, athletes will continue to rely on the mentorship coaches can provide.
While there are those who think that we as a society place far more emphasis on athletics than we do academics, the reality is that athletics may be the one thing that can keep a young person engaged with the structured environment of an education system and save them from the pitfalls of the streets.

Teammates, coaches mourn slain Silverado High School student-athlete
Victorville Daily Press
In what was supposed to be a fun week of preparations for the first round of the CIF-Southern Section playoffs, the Silverado football team is mourning the death of Richard Reed.
Fredrick Hunter never imagined that Oct. 28 would be the last time he stepped foot on the gridiron alongside Reed. Hunter never thought he would have to prepare for the first round of the playoffs without his beloved teammate at his side.
Reed, a linebacker and running back at Silverado, was found dead late Sunday night in Victorville after San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department deputies responded to the area of La Mesa and Jade roads. He was 17.

Eastern High School brings back wrestling after 20 year hiatus
WAVE-TV
Wrestling is a sport that back in the day Eastern was a powerhouse. “We always had at least one or two state champions almost every year,” said former assistant and head coach Shaun Davis. But once head coach, Phil Coomes retired and Davis took over the football team, the wrestling team went away, but now...it’s back. “Eastern’s like a melting pot, so some kids that have moved in from different states, different schools always asked, hey, do you guys have a wrestling program?” said Davis.

4 exercises (with extras) to boost your basketball vertical jump height
STACK
A powerful explosive vertical leap and dynamic agility are mandatory for basketball. All basketball sport-specific movements require it. For example, shooting, blocking, rebounding, etc. Unfortunately, merely practicing vertical jumping won’t help you maximize it. You need to put in the effort to improve your force production, technique, coordination, and timing. In addition, there are specific jumping exercises that you need to do to boost your vertical, that basketball practice will not.

Is swimming aerobic or anaerobic exercise?
Live Science
If hitting the pool is your favorite way of getting in a daily workout, you may have found yourself asking the question “is swimming aerobic or anaerobic exercise?”

STACK
While MLB might have been the first major sport to embrace analytics, the traditional clubhouse spread of things like hot dogs, nachos, pizza, and chicken has remained. You're eating healthier these days, but is it as healthy as you think?
HealthDay News
People trying to adopt a healthier diet probably aren't the best judges of how well they're actually eating, a new study discovers.
Only about 1 in 4 people could accurately estimate how healthy they were eating when asked to assess their diet after a year spent trying to lose weight, researchers found.
Worse, only 1 in 10 people understood how their diet had actually changed during that year, with most assuming they'd made much greater strides than they actually had.
